So what do you think? What (if anything) can you infer about someone based on their preferred age range, especially as it relates to their own age? So if someone excludes people their own age, what does that tell you about them? Or if someone has a really wide range, do you take that seriously? And do you think some people try to appear more open-minded than they really are?
Im 25, can be serious about dating. Range: 21-27. However in reality, I would probably only date 22-25.

Thank you. This is precisely the point I've been trying to make. People have a preferred age range. Whether it's something they state outright or keep to themselves is beside the point. What matters is that have one. But what's also true is what you just illustrated. A person may say they're open to someone older. But in truth, they're not serious about it. I could say I'm open to someone between 30 and 40, but that doesn't mean I'll give the 40 year old the same consideration as the 30 year old. I think experienced daters understand this. A 40 year old woman might meet a 40 year old guy. He doesn't show a lack of interest, but deep down, he was really hoping to meet a 30 year old.

This is definitely true. I mean i found this really cool, pretty girl, but I had trouble accepting she was almost two years older than me. It really bothered me for some reason and shoot I ended up rejecting her she said she wanted to be exclusive with each other. Its all good thought because I ended up with someone who was far greater!
I think people have preferred age ranges because of what they imagine people in a certain range are generally like. I notice when older men prefer younger women, they often state it's because they assume women in their age range are likely divorced with children (but they themselves are never married & would prefer the same in a partner).
Individuals tend to be exceptions to rules. In other words, WHO someone is will be more important than their age in reality (for most people; some people get hung up on numbers, but who wants those people anyway).

And why do people make assumptions? Because it saves time.
