That was generally true at my high school, but that was because everyone knew who everyone else's parents were, where they lived, where they were likely to be going, etc. Also, it was the norm that people hung out in groups and got to know each other before one person got into another person's car for a date. And even before that, they had classes together, school activities together, etc. That's MUCH different than two strangers meeting each other off of the internet, don't you think?
And, again, even if you don't think it's logical or rational, everyone is entitled to their preferences with dating. If their preferences are a deal-breaker for you, tell them "no thanks" and find someone else to date. Arguing with them about it doesn't accomplish anything.
