Why shouldn't they work for it? Why should anything be passed down? Gives them "incentive"--if that's something they actually want, then they earn it for themselves.

I have to say it is a small piece of heaven. One thing I have come to love about my wife and her family is that the Irish love their land like a member of the family. They even name it, often times after the town, county or farm the family knew back in Ireland.
My grandfather's brother married a farmer's daughter who was born on the farm. They lived with her parents and inherited the farm. Their children grew up there. They only recently sold it to live closer to town, because my great-uncle is in poor health and needs to be near his doctor. It was very sad for them. My great-aunt had lived her entire life in that house. They are nearly 80 now.

If you work hard and make yourself wealthy, when you die, wouldn't you like to have a say where your money and belongings go to? Or is it fine with you that Uncle Sam takes your whole estate in taxes and leaves your family with nothing?

Yes--and it isn't to my kids. Let them work hard and make themselves wealthy, just as I did. Not that I'm interested in becoming wealthy. In fact, I declined a raise just last night. I make more than enough now.

I work on our property every week to keep it beautiful. It is quite a task. Beside the world does not turn because of the materialism you preach. I like my father in-law and those who owned the property before us think of us as stewards of the land. In reality we own nothing. The Good Lord has given us something beautiful and we are entrusted to maintain it.

I'm not materialistic. I don't want to own anything--that's a point I've made earlier. I do not value things. A good meal and a roof over my head is enough--I don't have to have bought that roof.

TK - that is fine for YOU. BUT, and please don't take offense to this, BUT, you are a SERIOUS exception.

MOST, a MAJORITY of people want FAR MORE than you say you do. AND, there is NOTHING wrong with them wanting more than you say you do.

Yup, I agree with Miu, she pretty much answers the question. To add one bit, managing wealth (multiple homes, a business, property) is a job all in itself and those people work just as hard as person who punches a time clock the difference is they have more FREEDOM!
