Can limit apps shown down to phone, messages, and camera if I want. Or suppose just phone if thats all I wanted. Makes life easier since you cant find simple phones anymore and wading through three pages junk apps preinstalled is painful.
Can't you just move the unwanted app icons to the 2nd or 3rd page, or just dump them all in a folder.

I only recently realized that I could use my iPhone as a good scanner to record documents on the fly.

Using the camera app, hold steady over the page/article/business card/etc., & a small icon with 3 horizontal lines will appear lower right - touch this & your subject becomes a perfect scan that you can move to an appropriate folder or app.

You don't turn off smartphones. You leave them on all the time.
You charge them and silence them.
Nothing is more frustrating than calling or texting someone that has their phone turned off. It really is the expectation, for better or worse that your phone is on, if you have one. For example, would you have disconnected your hard line phone at any time back in the 1970's-1980's? Probably not. Before the 1970's it was probably impossible for you to turn off your hard wired phone without physically cutting a wire in half. Think of it that way.

Sorry, but I think I am turning into a broken record. You should turn your phone RIGHT OFF about once a week or so, in order to get all the bits of broken files and other glitches out of it that accumulate every time you go into a site or use a program or an app. If you don't remember to turn it back on, then you don't deserve to have a smartphone and it is smarter than you are. This is not just me saying this, numerous techie people and experts will tell you this.

These machines are not just phones and need to be treated like the pieces of equipment that they are.

But that is not what people are doing. They are turning them off because they aren't using them at the moment. They aren't rebooting their phones to clear out the cache.

That is something completely separate.

Just what is a "bits of broken files" ???

IIRC this is a "how to" thread. Not a "philosophy of how a smartphone is best used" thread.

I am quoting Post #229 from GearHead, who is much better at stating things than I am, and who talks about why to turn your phone off occasionally.

Good habit to get into, for me it's every few days. A cell phone is essentially no different that a PC or a laptop computer; the main difference is that unlike Windows or similar operating systems, the user has very little control over the management of the OS. What little control is available is usually under the "Settings", which folks find out quickly are very limited and a lot more difficult to use and understand than the "control panel" you usually have on a laptop or PC.

What generally happens is that a smartphone, like a PC gets progressively flakier over time as you install/delete apps - part of the reason is that many apps are poorly written, the app and the phone do not do a good job of "cleaning up" after themselves. Eventually the device gets unstable.

You may hear an argument that Google's Android is less stable than Apple's iOS. This was certainly true back in the days of Windows versus Mac, but I have seen problems with iOS as well as with Android. But in general iOS seems to be more stable than Android. (your mileage may vary)

Your frustration is not my problem. Yes, in the 1970s we either unplugged phones (at the RJ11 jack) or "took them off the hook." It was common. Some of us liked conjugal relations without rude interruptions from a chatty Cathy relative.

The "do not disturb" mode on a smartphone is less drastic.

OH lol at the "phone off the hook". My mother used to do that and one of us kids always put it back thinking it fell off by itself . And then we got yelled at for putting the phone back...go figure.

I didnt see an easy way to do it with the OEM setup. With the Discreet Launcher you can, though havent figured all the ends and outs. Stupid simple to just hide the stuff though when using Discreet Launcher. And nice blank homepage or whatever they call it on cellphones.

I like the option to just show the apps I want, not what somebody else wants me to use.

Phone, messaging, and camera. Makes a complicated mess quite tidy and simple. And sure it offers option to create folders and put other less used apps in folder. But some apps, why bother, just completely hide them if you NEVER use them. In ideal world you could just delete them, but nobody apparently makes enough money allowing people to do that.
