Good sound.. halyards clanking on sailboat mast in a marina in a breeze.
Bad sound.. same halyards clanking on a sailboat mast in a marina if you are trying to sleep..
Rain on a metal roof.. good sound. I have a metal roof that was put on an older house and when the metal roof was installed, a few inches of some type of foam insulation was added. This metal roof seems to work well.. no leaks but it makes all sorts of creaking noises when its heating up during the day. This is the only metal roof I have been under, do they all make all sorts of creaking noises during daily heating and cooling? Not really a bad sound..
LOVE that marina sound! Nothing else quite like it. That rapping clinking sound of lines slapping against masts can send me back to childhood days sailing with my Dad in seconds. Especially if its a well established older marina with a lot of vintage wooden sailing craft just add the scent of sun-heated varnish...
I've lived under metal roofs many times and would prefer one to just about any other type. The sound repertoire of each one is unique, affected by how the underlying insulation layer, support structure was built and whether there's an attic. Some were very quiet except during a really heavy downpour. Others seemed to "talk" a lot more often.
It doesn't happen every year, but when there is a dry autumn or late summer, the oaks that are over the little house on my land drop acorns on the metal roof all day and into the night, creating a clatter. I can't imagine having to live in that house and trying to sleep.
OTOH, it keeps me aware enough to hear the coyotes doing their thing, and I'm waiting for an owl to make an entrance in the soundscape. Beats police sirens and traffic noise any day of the week.
What noises do you enjoy?
I enjoy the squirrels barking at me through the day. We also have a few hawks that hang around us that screech very loudly. I also love the many songbirds.
I walk our long driveway at night for quiet and my alone time, well, with our two dogs. I love the sound of the owls, especially when calling for a mate. And, I just love the quiet.
^ Nearby is subjective . I used to occasionally hear a train from over 10 miles away on certain nights. Sound can travel a surprisingly long distance under the right conditions.
One of my favorite “sounds” is the special kind of silence the right kind of snow storm brings in. The heavy snow is a great sound dampener and can be deafening quiet.

We live at least 10 miles as the crow flies from RR tracks up and over several hills. But, tonight as I was taking my nightly walk with the dogs, I heard some muffled train noises on tracks then the train whistle as it passed through town near crossings. Sometimes, I can hear it, other times not. This could be due to deciduous trees bare of foliage.
But, often, it is so quiet here. Not the almost unreal quiet of remote Nevada desert but rural quiet. I like it.
I’ve always loved the sound of crickets on a summer night. Surprisingly as a kid growing up in a quiet neighborhood in the Bronx, we had plenty of crickets.
After living in the city all my life, we moved a few years ago to a semi-rural area. There is a commuter train through town nearby, with about 5 trains a day. They are required to toot the horn at every road crossing, and I enjoy hearing that. On a quiet night you can hear the church bell in town ringing the time on the hour.
This past year I took the dog out to the backyard for a pee very late one quiet night, and I heard for the first time some great horned owls hooting to each other. Now I notice when I wake up early like around 4-5am that I can hear them hooting to each other. One calls and others respond.
