Why don't we have an R&B station? But we have 4 Spanish stations just in FM (92.9, 94.1, 95.7, 104.1) that play the same thing (I have listened to them)

That's why I don't buy the whole thing about "ratings".
In cities that have R&B stations, there is a higher percentage of African-American residents. In San Antonio, according to City-Data.com, that percentage is just 6.4% with 23% of that segment living below the poverty line. The lack of stations implies that it's not a large enough or attractive enough market for advertisers.

I would have listened to 97.7 more if it had decent reception. I'm in the Westover Hills area and the station wasn't clear while everything was.

Race doesn't determine who listens to a certain type of music.
Just look at rap, most people that buy rap are white.

I've gone to enough parties in the Midwest (in the country) to confirm that that's true.

Well when 98.5 first started it was a lot more soul/urban focused. It was supposed to be "the black station". But as the years have gone by, you can see just how drastically the format has changed.

Now where is my Soul/R&B station?!
I agree. I'm in my mid-twenties. My sister is still a teenager and she thinks music is worse right now than it was in the 90s.

To be honest, there really isn't much mainstream r&b to play. All of the real soul artists are pretty much underground. What The Beat considers r&b today is actually dance pop. Even hip hop is sounding pretty electronic these days. I know about all of the current artists; I just don't like them. The rappers are no longer lyricists and the singers don't have any talent. Everything is Auto-Tuned.

The reception on 97.7 is still pretty bad. I think San Antonio has a huge rock market because the major rock concerts are the ones we consistently get. I really don't know if there are new rock bands to fill the void left by the aging rock bands who were so popular 10 years ago. Since San Antonio has a strong hip hop market which I think is mainly driven by the Hispanic population, I think there is a market for r&b if there's any to play.

Ehh, I've hated the music on SA radio since I was probably 15 or so. It's not like there isn't good current music out there, it's just not on top 40 (which, through my thorough research, only 12-16 year old girls enjoy) and recycled modern rock (frat-boy radio). With satellite radio, pandora, grooveshark, etc., if you really like music you wouldn't be listening to terrestrial radio anyway.

Saying the top 40 stuff "sounds like techno" gives actual techno, and electronic music in general, a bad name.

Most of y'all are dumb and know nothing about radio. The way ratings are determined recently changed in the past year from diaries (people writting down what station they listen to and for how long) to ppm (a pager like device that tracks how long people listen to a station). This allows for more accurate readings on how long people listen to a station. 96.1 went from middle of the pack to the top station in the city due to this change. That means more advertising dollars for 96.1. 94.1 is a joke and just copies whatever 96.1 does. 97.7 is doing the same thing and is just trying to get some of those ad dollars. Obviously Top 40 is popular music cuz that's what gets ratings. It's called Top 40 for a reason.
