“This flood we are in is affecting people along the Missouri River from border to border,’’ Daugaard said. “While the public attention is focused on the intense efforts in the Pierre and Fort Pierre areas, the record flows will cause the same kinds of problems downstream. This isn’t a case of whether downstream residents will be hit with this. They will be, and the better informed and better prepared they are to protect themselves and their communities, the better all of us will get through this.’’

With the levee construction, Daugaard has made a call for drivers and machine operators and announced that he would sign an executive order to remove the commercial driver’s license requirement to operate heavy trucks and equipment in the Missouri River flooding areas. He said there are many farmers and ranchers who know how to run these types of equipment but don’t necessarily need the license for their purpose.
Daugaard also announced that U.S. Highway 1806 and the roads leading to the stilling basin are closed. He said closures were made to allow trucks to do their work and to ensure public safety. He, along with Gill and Tidball, said traffic on the streets should be eliminated to only necessary traffic, meaning people who want to see the flooded areas should refrain from doing so.
“If you are not volunteering, stay off the streets,†he said.
Businesses and homes on the Pierre side up to Sioux Ave. are expected to be impacted as the flood level reaches 1,434'.

PIERRE, S.D. Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that, based on projections by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, all residents of Dakota Dunes should immediately begin making plans to evacuate later this week, due to Missouri River flooding.
Residents should have their possessions moved, homes secured and be out of those homes by late Thursday, June 2. They should expect to be away from their homes for as much as two months because elevated releases of water from the mainstem dams will continue for several weeks.
