Hey 2mares,
Thanks for being cool. I can't claim that what I experienced is by any means "normal", it's just what I experienced and therefore, think it is worth sharing as a viewpoint for someone else to consider before taking the jump. And I should clarify that not everyone was a jerk, there were a lot of them to be sure, but not everyone. I know what you mean about the "N"word in OH. It wasn't like it wasn't used in NY also. It was just hard to go from having friends of every color to being judged for talking to black people. Maybe Dickson was it's own weird little corner of the south, too.

A lot has changed since you lived here. A lot. Dickson might not have changed as much, but I guarantee it is different from the place you remember. I don't think that the attitude towards race/religion are the same as they used to be in Tennessee area in general, and certainly not closer in to Nashville.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience here in the past, but please don't let it keep your perception of this area so negative! Even if you don't consider moving here, I encourage you to take a trip here just to see how much the area has changed. Maybe you will have a more positive experience to help change your views about the area.

How would what happened thirty years ago in The South have any relevance?

What I don't understand is you complained about growing up in LI, too.

I grew up in CI also. I left as soon as I could (talkin' 1986). Back then it was pretty much a violent, dirty town, but it was home.

And here you say that you loved TN.

I grew up in NY on LI and loved TN
