Italy is like a third world country now. I'll never go back there. Filled with dirty streets and crime. Street vendors who aggressively hawk cheap merchandise and pickpockets everywhere.
Won't come back to read the replies.
Italy is like a third world country thanks to the friendly, generous Italians who welcomed the unwashed masses of the third world into their country.

Can confirm.
Florence is 10 times more dangerous than Shanghai or Bangkok for tourists. I was harassed by the Gypsies. The locals told me the Gypsies were looking for my wallets. I thought these Gypsies were going to assault me and I was ready to beat them to death, I guess these Gypsies didn't expect me to be so tough so they gave up.
The worst in Thailand happened to me was the unscrupulous taxi drivers. I heard of tourist scams in Thailand, but nothing too bad.
The biggest third world country, China, isn't perfect. But nobody complains about safety/harassment in China. The most unpleasant thing that could happen to foreign tourists is being stared by curious locals. In big cities, few people bother to overcharge foreign tourists anymore. Most people in Shanghai, locals or tourists, buy bottled water, coke, snacks from convenience stores. These convenience stores are chain stores, it would be ridiculous to assume employees are going to overcharge you.
Anyway, global travel isn't environment-friendly. I hope OP stays safe at home. Don't venture into third world countries. They are already saturated with tourists.
I would never waste my money or vacation time visiting a place LESS nice than the area I live in.
Some countries that are third world today used to be rich once upon a time. They still have the architectural wonders and history from their golden ages. Many aspects of their modern culture go back thousands of years.
You will certainly learn things you never knew before.

No. Obviously China is quite safe but there is hardly a dearth of unpleasant things for tourists. Tea scam, art house scam, tailor scams, fake beggars, black taxis, fake bus stops, crap jade, pick pockets, etc.

This is silly, they are no more saturated than anywhere else and plenty of third world countries have areas with very few tourists.
I have traveled to most of the popular 1st world countries in Europe and Asia. They were nice but I want to expand my horizons and see the 3rd World. I want to see exotic and economically struggling countries where life is completely different than here in America.
My question is this: If I walk up and down the streets of third world countries will I be hassled, bothered or even attacked? Will people stare at me and make getting around difficult? Tell us your experiences traveling in third world countries.
The place I got the most harassment was Italy.
It was gross and annoying.
And it was the Italian men...not whoever else washed up.

Wow. We spent a month in Italy--6 different cities and I didn't see this at all. We loved every minute of it. Sorry people had bad experiences! Certainly seemed "First World" to me.

Whoa. We must have been in different parts of Florence. In 6 days, I didn't see Gypsy One there.
For sure I never felt in any danger!
It's good to be so tough, though!
