Minervah - have you seen season 2? British reviewers don't seem to think it was as well written produced as season 1. It does sound like a roller coaster ride though.

Yes, I have seen season two and I enjoyed it better that season one. I disagree with the reviewers but they have the right to their opinions too.
I watched Downton Abbey last week on Netflix and fell in love with it. Now I have a ton of British series set to watch but I haven't found anything yet to match up with the brilliance of Downton Abbey although I really enjoyed Wuthering Heights with Tom Hardy. Right now I just started Daniel Daronda which I know I will love because I'm a big fan of Hugh Dancy. Does anyone know if Matthew Goode did any BBC series? I loved him in Brideshead Revisted.
Have you ever seen Doctor Finlay? If not, I highly recommend renting the DVDs.
OK, I misunderstood. Still I would think that such a wound, given that they were in trenches, would have been highly suspect to his superiors.
If you do a little digging on the interwebs, it looks like superiors were highly suspect of injuries like Thomas'. He might have covered himself in that, like we've already said, no one saw it happen, and he didn't shoot himself, so the injuries were from a German bullet, not an English one.
I'm not feeling the whole Sybil/Branson romance. Last season we saw him encourage her political views, then something must have gone on in the two-year gap between the seasons for him to declare himself to her as she was going off to nursing school. Maybe it's bad writing or bad acting, but they seem to have a much chemistry as I do with the dude who works at the coffee shop (which is not much.)

Just one more indication that this thing is really just an above average soap opera. Still I am enjoying it so far in spite of all these little problems.
I don't know...I think the whole pregnant maid story line is turning it into a soap opera. Yet, I am sure that it happened, I am surprised that nothing was done about the officer. Surely, it wasn't acceptable for them to be involved in such scandal. The ending of the latest episode did remind me of a soap opera...and make me want to buy the Season 2 UK version so that I can finally watch it all!
There are only so many plots... I think you can reduce most stories down to about one of about dozen different plots - just swap in different settings and characters...
Bottom line, it's not "soapy" or over-dramatic - so if it has a few plot twists that seem more soap opera than high drama, I'm okay with it!
As for Sybil and Branson, I like them together! And I do think they have chemistry. Cora and Violet described Sybil as being an innocent, and she truly is. She was just coming of age as the war started, and her focus has been on work, rather than romance, ever since. Then add to that the fact that as she says, every man she ever danced with, has now been killed, and it's not surprising that romance has not been on her mind. And Branson would NOT be someone she would see in a romantic sense - at least not initially. So it's not surprising to me at all that she's warming up to the idea of romance with Brandon, very slowly. But she is warming up... She's definitely attracted to him - even if she's not sure why.
And the pregnant maid? That actually happened a lot! So I'm glad they have a storyline that addresses that kind of blurring of the lines, between the classes. That said, I'm not that fond of Ethel, the maid, and the officer in question just comes across as smarmy. If they were to ship the two of them off to a cottage on the far edge of the grounds, that would be fine with me!
Ohh, other fans of Downton Abbey! I love this show. Mind if I butt in on y'all's thread?
