Me too! She's going to play Cora's mother in Season 3. This is going to be good.
The bit I read said that her character's name is Martha Levinson, so would that make Cora Jewish? I can only imagine the Dowager Countess clutching her pearls at that.
Vera Bates certainly is dastardly, but I don't quite understand her motivation. She hates Mr. Bates for whatever reason, but the Mary/Pamuk scandal coming out will tarnish the Crawley's reputation, not so much him. Bates could always go work at the pub again.

Well, I think that's one of the dynamics that this show really highlights; the relationship between the staff and the family. They begin to care about the family and their reputation as if it were their own. Well, except for Thomas.
I haven't quite figured out Mrs. Bates motivation either. While she is certainly a nasty creature, she has been the person that has consistently wronged Mr. Bates and from all appearances, he has done nothing to her to garner this level of animosity. Perhaps we will find more as the show unfolds.
I just love Maggie Smith's character so much that I cannot wait until she is confronted with Cora's mother. Cora has had a few stubborn moments with the Dowager Countess and I imagine she came across that strong will honestly!
ETA: Cora being Jewish would be an interesting twist. After all, Cora was only 'desirable' for her money that she brought to the equation and I'm sure the Dowager Countess likes to forget that detail. I imagine having Cora's mother there will be a constant reminder. And to think she thought Mrs Crawley was challenging.
Something I just thought of as well. 1918 should be around the corner, so to speak. That's the Spanish Influenza year.
Can Mrs. Levinson be jewish? Judiasm follows a matriarchal line - all children of the mother will be Jewish meaning Cora would be Jewish as well as Mary, Edith and Sybil.
I suspect Vera is one of those who doesn't easily let go of anyone she feels she can victimize or manipulate. Truly a nasty bit of work.
Just an FYI - anyone can post Spoilers, just highlight your text and click the spoiler button (show/hide on the right above the text box) and anyone who does not want to see it, doesn't have to. Just make sure that if you respond to the spoiler, that you also hide it. I do realize that many of us are on different parts of the season. I personally don't feel that knowing what is going to happen ruins my experience of watching the show, but I do understand that others may not be happy with that.
It sure is building up, love the dowager! How many more episodes?
When can we talk about it?
