I did notice a weird vibe between Lord Grantham and the maid, but I didn't consider her son as a possible heir. However the baby of the maid who got fired could be a possibility. Perhaps adopted by Mathew and Mary?
Or perhaps the illegitimate son of the Earl and the maid being passed off as Matthew's son?
When you click on this you get the message that NBC Universal has blocked it on copywright grounds. How frustrating. I guess I keep getting there too late; it's always blocked by the time I arrive.
Last night's episode was so, so corny. Long-lost cousin with amnesia? Check. Miraculous recovery from paralysis? Check. Convenient death of villainous ex-wife? Check.
If it was that cut-and-dried, I would agree with you - but I don't think it is.
I'm with Mary on the long lost cousin. It's far too convenient - for him - and none of them recognized him. Even with his face blown off, one of them would have recognized the twinkle in his eye, or the way he speaks or walks or something. He even said that he expected Edith to recognize the sound of his voice - but she didn't. She didn't recognize anything in him until he told her who he supposedly is. AND, he went straight for Edith - who "loved" her cousin, and was thus easily manipulated - rather than going to Lord Grantham first. And with that much money at stake, it's not hard to imagine someone willing to impersonate an heir... Bottom line, it's just really fishy - so if he is the real heir, the writers have a lot of redeeming to do!
As for the miraculous recovery from paralysis, I was surprised that they were so quick to write him off in the first place. Once the tissue began to heal, and the bruising went down, it seemed very possible that he might gain some feeling back - and in time, maybe walk again.
And the "convenient" death of villainous ex-wife doesn't seem at all convenient to me! If anything it's going to cause Bates even more trouble - at least for a while.

That story line bothered me as well. While it's fun to see Violet scheme, the fact that Isobel fell for it so quickly? And with so little thought? And that she seems more interested in her own ego, than in anything else? It's disappointing.
When Isobel and Violet went at each other in the past, it was great fun - but last night it was just sad.
The 'cousin' is absolutely a fraud. You don't lose your manner of speaking after living in a different country for a few years. There's no way he's sound completely 'Canadian'.

I agree that this episode was weak and overly soap-operaish. I hope it's not a Jump The Shark moment.

I love this show, but could have done without this ridiculous story line. I kept looking at Patrick's Monty Python-esque bandaging and wanted to laugh. And then as suddenly as he appeared he was gone. What was the point?
Oh well - I still love the series and will continue watching.
Poor Bates can't catch a break. It appears that Mrs. Bates has been murdered. I really feel so sorry for Mary, loving Matthew and having to marry that awful man. Her father really feels her pain.
