Even with the bandleader guy (Ross?), the entire reaction of everyone at the party just seemed a little too "modern." Here we've got a bunch of over-privileged white aristocrats in 1920s Northern England, and the only one who says something even remotely racist or unaccepting is Edith? I don't expect a deep examination of race relations, but come on, Fellowes. He's the only black character on the entire show.
I was also surprised, given the times, how accepting everyone was, too - I was expecting old Lady Grantham to have some kind of seizure or attack. I have to say that Edith's character behaved against type. She is supposedly one of the more modern and forward thinking of Downton regulars. When she said what she said, my jaw just dropped. I love the writing on the show, but during this scene the writers dropped the ball big time because of the inconsistency. Also, did I miss something on the show? I have watched all of the episodes, but I think I missed something. When did Michael get back into Edith's good graces? He left her at the alter and then the next season they are together again. Edith is pregnant?

I think that Edith was so out of sorts because (I think) she is preggers and the man has disappeared in Germany. I could see her lashing out at anything just at that moment. A new thread in the saga! Maybe Edith will marry Tom so that he could, indeed, "marry another earl's daughter" and stay at Downton after all. Edith would still be respectable but probably not happy.

Black musicians were quite fashionable in Europe at the time, and African-Americans preferred performing there because they didn’t have U.S.-style segregation. They were treated as exotic servants—much as portrayed in the episode. The shocking thing would have been Rose making out with the bandleader, but only Mary saw that part.
I hate most of the writing in the show, but I thought that portrayal of the band was pretty accurate.

I wonder if she is really as worried over his fate right now as hers. It's not only unacceptable that she got pregnant, but its humiliating that the father has dissapeared. Maybe he did so because of someone else, but she's got to be thinking he dumped her. And then, there was that paper she signed. She says she's been to the office. Does she know what it is and isn't telling anyone?
I don't think she's as 'modern' as she seems either. Especially since her friend may have turned into the worse choice she could have made in mulitple ways. It wouldn't be odd for her to slip back into the conventional all the harder.
I think Edith is the woman of the time who looks ahead, but is still tied to the past and its comfort. And her sisters all tried to push the rules, and she may have tried to follow.
It seemed a little premature to show a Black singer backed by white musicians. There were more interracial groups during the late 20s and 1930s in Britain. Also, the vocal style did not seem to fit the era.
I think that black band leader has a tin ear. He can't sing worth a darn.
And a male singing "I'm just wild about Harry"??????? Seems to me that would be more appropriate for a woman to sing. Look at these lyrics!
