They never established what brand of Christianity is used in Gilead. It's like some fundamentalist mormanism / Amish hybrid on speed.
Definitely see some aspects of the FLDS/Warren Jeff's cult in there.
As for the entire US being under Gilead control, I'd like to see more world-building in that arena. Did the entire country just go with the whole thing? Or will "The Colonies" be revealed to be nuked out areas that were once states that refused to comply and then suffer a firestorm from a supposedly, better equipped Gileadan force.

That's a great question. How did the fundamentalists gain enough traction to overthrow a democratic government? We know it was a coup. That much we know. But how did the forces supply and arm themselves. ?
I'm hoping we'll get more of a back story with season two. With all the armed people in the USA I do found it hard to believe that something like this could really happen but it makes for an interesting book and show.
Did anyone notice how the Commander Fred tried to lessen the punishment for his fellow commander? The guy's wife ASKED for a strict punishment for her husband. The look on Fred's face..... Wow.

Any sort of group that gets a significant number of arms gets targeted by the government already. A regular armed populace can do nothing against the US military.

She explained it. A terrorist attack killed Congress. Martial Law was imposed. Many people who never read this book got very fearful when that anthrax scare caused Congress to sign the Patriot Act.

Congress would have signed it regardless. Americans are ready and willing to give up all of their rights. We do it all the time and don't bat an eye. There is no such thing as privacy anymore . Try doing anything with large amounts of cash anymore. You can't even buy a house without signing HOmeland security financial paperwork. Yet I see no signs of dissent. I think it's easy to create a police state here. No coup needed. My question is how did they flip the military?

IDK anything about a coup in this story. But yeah, it's super-easy for the US to become a police state. Part of the point.

IKD if they had to 'flip' the military. The military takes orders from whoever is in charge.
