First off, you will definitely not get $1k for 30PS2 games and the system. The system alone sells for like $75. The more recent, popular games for PS2 (for example FFXII, which I just traded in) will sell for $12 tops. GTA San Andreas and the like will sell for more like $5.
I have all 3 systems, Wii, XBOX360 and PS3. I was a dedicated PS2 game before the nextgens came out. My XBOX360 gets the most usage right now. Their online service smokes PSHome, and they have more games out right now, plus you get achievements.
In a year or two, I feel PS3 will be the better system once FFXIII comes out and some other system exclusive games, but right now the XBOX360 is the best bang for your buck if you want only one system.
The standard 360's do not come w/ HDMI support, you get component cables. The difference is very, very slight. You must have a 1080p television to see any type of difference.
And yes, you need the 80gig PS3 to have full backwards compatibility ($600)

Well I had a 360 and loved it, until I got my 3rd RROD within a year so I dropped MS completely and have the PS3. I only have 3 games as I use it primarily for the Blu Ray
But how much does the xbox360 online cost a year?
And what do you get out of achievments......nothing
Achievements have helped me get SO much more out of games. It really increases replayability and full enjoyment of the entire game. For example Mass Effect (which I'm playing now), has several bonuses you receive for unlocking certain achievements. If a game is available on PS3 and 360, I generally get it for 360 because of achievements. I did get Devil May Cry for PS3 because it loads scenes directly onto the hard drive upon first run, decreasing loading times.
Live costs $60/year. I got a prepaid card on ebay for $45. I have both PS3 and Live and PS3Home is garbage compared to Live right now. Now, PS3 is set to launch a new Home service in the Summer that looks awesome, but I can't really comment on that until I get a chance to test it out.
Like I said, for right now, 360 has the edge. There are more games and features available. The PS3 has more potential long term. As for RROD, I have been lucky in that respect. Had my 360 for almost 2 years now with no issues (and I frequently leave it on for days w/ game paused)
And yes, the 80g PS3 is $499 now. When I got it, it was $599.
Did the xbox ever fix the "red ring of death" issue? I'm still playing through the excellent backlog of games on the PS2 (still excellent games from the past I haven't played out yet) but will probably be ready for the next generation in the spring or summer, hopefully there will be another price drop on the consoles.
I want to like the 360, but I don't know, with an estimated 35% failure rate.
Someone mentioned PC gaming. One word - VISTA. There are just to many issues with VISTA, particularly with gaming, and all computers sold now have that. XP, the most stable OS that windows ever had, will be obsolete sooner or later unfortunetly. I don't want to have vista and have to work with an IT tech for 12 hours just to get a game working.
