Are you saying that Honolulu is not a tropical climate?

Where did all this nonsense that subtropical climates had to have wet summers come from? Subtropical does not equal humid subtropical.

A common theme of summer is hot blasts, and winter cold blasts, hence continental climate. DC is not subtropical just humid continental. You act as if these warm spells are equal in length and duration to the cold outbreaks. Not true, and that is reflected in the avg max and min temps. DC has avg low temps below freezing, and no avg high above 50F.
Not true. Its much more common to get a high temp of 50F in DC than 30F in the winter. DC has more in common in the winter with Atlanta than Chicago. Sorry but I just can't see DC not be subtropical IMO.

DC is far too cold in winter. I don't know how anyone can keep a straight face and say that it's subtropical!

Honolulu belong to the semi-arid domain, precipitation are just to low, if you go outside the city of Honolulu in the plain (not in the mountain where the precipitation are higher because of the elevation) you will noticed that the landscape is pretty dry. I don't like this way of seeing tropical climate as a all year round hot climate. Belong to tropical domain involve to have tropical characteristics (like convective warm rain, high dew point...) not just all year round warm/hot temperature.

I think subtropical does mean humid subtropical. For example, of course someone could call Los Angeles subtropical but its technically a Mediterranean climate not really subtropical.

Yes, that is true, just as there are tropical deserts, savanas, forests, etc. these too apply to the subtropics.

its more subtropical than London. DC has an average high in jan of about 44. Late May to Late September tropical weather dominates. I cant see anyone say DC is not subtropical with a straight-face. Everyone here keeps ignoring the summer season and the shoulder seasons and just focusing on winter. Winter in the US east coast is a mixed bag, the person who summed up our climate best said ( cant remember the poster, he was the Brazilian guy cant remember the name) said the eastern us was humid subtropical with continental influences. Couldn't put it any better.

You seeing the subtropical domain as a geographical point of view not as a climate point of view.

Define cold. Of course its your opinion what cold is but DC gets too much warm spells to be humid continental. Also as I said before DC is much closer to Altanta in the winter than Chicago.

Chicago Jan. High: 31

Atlanta Jan. High: 52

DC Jan. High : 44

You tell me which one DC is closer to temp wise.
