2012 was a terrible year, apart from March.

The summer was one of the coolest, cloudiest and wettest on record.

In many cities in Serbia, January 2017 is colder than February 2012. For example average temperature in my town in February 2012 was -4,5c , and average temperature in January 2017 is -5,1c. But in February 2012 was more snow. In my town in February 2012 was more than 50cm of snow, and in January 2017 only 10cm. Winter 2017 is the driest in Serbia ever. January 2017 was not cold in whole of Europe, in western and northern Europe temperatures were above average. Winter 2012 was extremely cold in whole of Europe.

In Spain we had the 4th coldest year in the XXI century according to the official AEMET report.

9 places broken the record of the minimum historical temperature registered in January.

Comparison with 1981-2010 January averages...

OK, my mistake. I meant to say UK and Ireland. Especially Ireland, in Ireland temperature were above average. In Scandinavia also I think that January 2017 is above average(I'm not sure for December 2016).

January 2017 was colder than average in the UK. It was milder in Ireland.

Yes Ireland was quite warm last month.

Ariete, Lommaren and Baba are from Scandinavia. How was January there within the normal averages?

I just had a look at Svalbard (I realise it gets separate weather to the rest of Scandinavia), and January 2017 there was 5.0C above average at -10.3C, but then again December was 7.4C above average and November was 12.6C above average so maybe only 5C above average counts as cold for that part of the world these days.

Their February 2017 average is going to be a joke, they average about -16C at this time of year yet last week they went six days in a row without even a frost!

In my town in January was 23 ice days. The lowest temperature was -22c(12th January). The highest temperature was 8c(1th January). Maximum snow cover was 10cm. In central, western and southern Serbia snow cover was 20-30cm, and in mountains around 40cm. The lowest temperature in Serbia was -33c in village Karajukića Bunari https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karajukića_Bunari . December and January were above average. Both 2.0-2.5C above normal in my province.

Also chilly in Cyprus with 2C on 2 different stations on the south.
