That's because British expats will moan about the UK as much as possible, even when it isn't true.
That's certainly true, but I think they generally do perceive the summers here differently as well.
On a more tangible note, people from places in the UK that have warmer summers than here, will say, that tomatoes and watermelons etc grow much better here, despite the colder summer nights. I don't think it's all just perception
I can't grow tomatoes in my location due to disease in the soil, but they will grow perfectly well in a grow bag. Watermelons can grow in the south too, but you have warmer shoulder seasons. It's also much wetter there, which probably helps. Even growing squashes or courgettes here require daily heavy watering in late spring and summer, and watermelons are even more thirsty.
Our peak summer is notably warmer than yours, but yours lasts an extra month or 2.

Dry conditions are still a problem for gardening here. The rain tends to be of short duration, and sea breezes or southeast winds are a constant, so the ground dries quickly.
I do think the UK overall has a foul climate, and it's not based on stereotypes. Of course I don't paint the whole country with the same brush, while Scotland is downright terrible, the Southeast is only mediocre.
