525 pounds is not "overweight", regardless of height. It is even beyond "morbidly obese", and yes, I think that is a tough sell for most employers. That weight would break furniture.
On the other hand, there is no way I would hire someone who is obviously anorexic, either, such as the emaciated actress in "Stranger Things." Ick.
Overweight and chubby and slender (but not sickly thin-looking) are all OK with me as a hiring manager, and would be treated equally to their "normal" weight competitors.
525 is not overweight? The avg weight of linesman in NFL is about 325lbs and are 6'4"
Well i have a wife that is little on the big side but not much more then me.. But some heavy people have a hard time standing, bending, picking up things from the floor. The list can go on.. Its not because they are bias, its because the job will require some physical work to do. If you cant stand for 8+ hours a day or walk 8 hours without the need of a walmart wheel chair, then your not a fit for that company. I get it some have real medical issues, and some have a real time dealing with real life struggles and eating is their gateway drug.
Not to mention all the health issues, increased sick days needed and therefore more days calling out and having to reschedule someone else on the fly.
Seems to me someone who tips the scales at 500+ pounds has more than just a weight problem. Physical health issues aside, what the heck are they thinking, abusing themselves like that?? They need mental help.
I have cerebral palsy and physical disabilities are often an area where hiring managers will discriminate against candidates, even when the role isn't physically demanding. But those of us with CP were BORN with it...it wasn't the result of lifestyle decision. So I have little to no sympathy for people complaining about weight discrimination.
PS: I'm skinny because I watch my diet and exercise.
PPS: There may be a very small fraction of the public (1 to 2%) that has some biological/physical issues that prohibit them from losing weight...but they are the EXCEPTION.
And yes, I do have a job and work as a machine learning engineer in the tech industry.
Might depend on where you live. If I'm not mistaken, "appearance" (in general) is protected in some states... I'll have to confirm that later, though.
Appearance is not a protected status anywhere. In any state.
I tell people I hire every single day not to change their appearance because I've hired them for the way they look. They must stay beard free and cannot sport a full face tattoo.
Yeah, well I know 300 lb. executive assistants who get hired over me. Same experience, same great skills, but for some reason they get hired. I'm not some sexy model or anything, but am an average weight and look professional when I go on interviews.
