Its the style. Period.

much like on the Maine seacoast you see Men from Quebec wearing capris pants.

Board shorts come in cool Hawaiian prints and are colorful. Speedos....don't. And aren't, so much.

Probably the next fad for male swimwear in North America will be short shorts. It always swings back toward the opposite extreme.

Short shorts were the norm for most of the 20th century, actually. Watch those old movies from the 50s to the 60s, most of the guys are wearing short shorts not speedos. Speedos peaked in the 70s-80s.

I didn't read the whole thread (it's veeery long). But it seems that everyone here is assuming that knee-long swimsuits are only used in the US and Canada. Here, in Argentina, South America (yeah, Latinos), we men wear mostly knee-long swimsuits too. Perhaps not long to the knee, but certainly longer than the traditional shorts. Now that I think of it, I have the impression that relatively young men, like me (I'm 35), and younger wear knee-long swimsuits, whereas older men (say, 60+) wear something more close to shorts. But maybe it's just my impression. In any case, most men don't wear shorts to the beach. In fact, knee-long swimsuits have been kind of fashionable since quite a long ago, like 20 years perhaps or even more. It's the same with soccer shorts. If you see what soccer players used to wear (in the world in general, I would say) in the 80s and compare it with now, you'll see that the length of those shorts has increased quite a bit.

As to speedos (today I learned a new word), definitely not, we don't wear those over here as a rule. There are exceptions, but they are really exceptions, usually eccentric types. We call speedos "sungas", that's what they are called in Brazil and we tend to associate speedos/sungas with that country.

Perhaps Sophie can help with this. Women are more aware of these things in general. Perhaps Sophie has already posted (I already said I didn't read the whole thread). :P
