Description: Raices (roots) and Taller (workshop) is both a gallery and a workshop. The brainchild of a group of local artists, it’s the only Latino-based nonprofit cooperative contemporary gallery in the city. Located in the historic Warehouse District, this is a terrific and vibrant art space. The gallery offers workshops in silk-screening, silver sand casting, and papier-mâché and is renowned for its unique Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibits. Description: Located in the original ranch house in the Roy Drachman Agua Caliente Park, this small gallery in a beautiful setting features works by artists from Pima County with a focus on Southwest themes. The shows change every 6 weeks and have included photography, oil, watercolor, and sculpture. Admission is free. The gallery is open Wed through Sun, Nov through Apr, and Tues through Sat, May through Oct. The ranch house itself is a piece of Tucson history, completely furnished with period antiques and wonderful historic photos of the surrounding park area.

Description: This funky gallery showcases the work of acclaimed local artist Daniel Martin Diaz. Enter this gothlike domain to view his amazing and macabre work, reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch with a Southwest twist. The entirely self-taught artist’s paintings are in many major museums and private collections around the country, and his artwork and illustrations have been commissioned for several feature films and album covers. Description: Santa Theresa artisans make one-of-a-kind handcrafted and painted tile works at this working studio. Located in the historic Firestone Building, it’s amazing to see the creativity at work here—from individual custom tiles to full-scale artworks and murals in fantastic designs and colors. Here you can browse the showroom and see the works in progress at the studio. Santa Theresa has also produced several public artworks in town; ask for a copy of the guide listing locations. If you’re creative, the studio offers many workshops throughout the year. Open Tues through Sat.

Description: Tohono Chul Park’s small gallery rotates works of regional artists with about 16 changing exhibits each year. Past exhibits have included American Indian art, photography, and Mexican tile art. Description: Founded in 1977, MOCA exhibits the work of avant-garde contemporary artists with 8 to 12 temporary exhibitions each year, some solo exhibitions, and some thematic group exhibitions. The museum offers a variety of education and outreach lectures and events designed to educate the community about issues and ideas in contemporary art. MOCA is Tucson’s only public institution devoted exclusively to the art of our time. Open Wed through Sun. There is an admission fee but under 17 are free.

Description: This museum is much more than dusty exhibits tracing the history of the state. Here you’ll find hands-on exhibits, most notably the period rooms where you can see how Arizonans lived and worked through the decades. The museum also houses an extensive photo exhibit, a research library, and a Mining Hall, where visitors can learn about the impact this industry made in Arizona. The gift shop is great, too. The Downtown Museum, in the Wells Fargo Bank, 140 N. Stone Ave., highlights Tucson history with rotating exhibits. There are varying admission fees. (See the Attractions chapter.)
