Description: Their hours are irregular, but if your child loves toy trains, this is the place to go. This huge warehouse space is home to 5 tabletops of operating miniature train layouts, and each layout models a different scale environment. Kids can even operate some of the controls. From the intersection of N. Romero and W. Roger Roads, go north to Price Street and turn left (west). Go 2 blocks to Miller Avenue. Call ahead for hours of operation; admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Description: Housed in a very cool-looking fort, the International Wildlife Museum features over 400 kinds of mammals, insects, and birds from around the world. There’s just one thing—they’re all stuffed! But kids seem to love this friendly, easily accessible museum nonetheless. Especially because they can touch just about everything here (a real plus), including hairy buffalo, a life-size lion, a bear, and a crocodile. You can also watch some terrific nature films in the comfortable 98-seat theater. There’s also a gift shop and restaurant on the premises. The museum is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas, Mon through Fri 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat and Sun 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $3 for kids 4 to 12; children under 4 are free.

Description: A great way to introduce kids to nature, this tiny garden created just for them is a lovely oasis in the middle of the larger botanical garden. A giant bee and butterfly hover above touchable and edible plants, a worm farm, and a beautiful water wall made of exquisite ceramic tiles that you’ll have trouble dragging your kids (and yourself) away from.Butterfly Magic is another big draw for kids. For an extra admissions fee, you can walk through a greenhouse full of fluttering live tropical butterflies and view their stages of development from pupa on in a special exhibit, only on display October through April.
