Description: If you are in search of new terrain for off-roading, you’ll find that Nickerson State Park is practically the only place on the Lower Cape to ride a mountain bike. Service roads wind along the perimeter of the park, offering some fun dirt paths to play on; weave in and out of pine forests, and suddenly you’ve left the paved world behind. And, once you do that at Nickerson, the possibilities are endless. The park has 8 miles of paved biking trails that connect to numerous freshwater ponds and picnic areas. If you want the park to yourself, come here in late fall, winter, or early summer before the campers arrive. A map is available at the entrance.

55. Dolphin Fleet

City: Cape Cod, MA
Category: Parks & Recreation
Telephone: (508) 240-3636, (800) 826-9300

Description: Originator of the whale-watching industry on the Eastern Seaboard, the Dolphin Fleet always has a naturalist on board to provide informative and entertaining commentary about the whales. We like the fact that whale watches on this line are small; although the boats can hold more, the number of passengers is limited to 145. It also helps that the vessels were designed with stability in mind. The central cabin is heated, and the galley serves breakfast, lunch items, and snacks. During peak season the Dolphin Fleet offers eight trips a day, and it offers trips from mid-Apr through Oct. The cost is $39 for adults and $31 for children ages 5 to 12. Children four and under ride free.
