Description: Learn saltwater fly fishing from Orvis-trained guides. Two-day courses are offered May through Aug for $470 per person (including lunch, bait, and the use of equipment). Lessons include distance casting, saltwater fly selection, big-game knots, leader rigging, fish feeding habits, “reading the surf,” and safe wading practices. This outfit also employs 10 Orvis-endorsed fishing guides who lead flats-fishing, rip-fishing, and wading trips mostly in the Monomoy Flats area.

Description: For almost 60 years, Goose Hummock has been catering to the needs of Lower Cape anglers. This shop carries a full line of fishing equipment, including major brands of fly-fishing equipment, outdoor clothing, hunting and hiking gear, canoes, and kayaks. Goose Hummock is open year-round, offers fishing licenses, and has an extensive inventory in both sales and rentals. Goose Hummock fishing guides conduct trips of three hours and longer.

Games are played during June and July at many fields across the Cape with playoffs held in mid-July. Here’s a chance to perhaps see some future members of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Description: Three hundred runners compete in this 5-mile road race. Held in late July or early Aug, it begins at Wixon Middle School on Route 134 and winds through Dennis, utilizing the bike path when possible. The entry fee is $15, but $20 on race day. Walkers and wheelchairs are welcome.

Description: In late Oct, the Cape Cod Marathon attracts about 1,200 participants. It is a Boston Marathon–qualifying event and also includes a team relay event. It begins and ends at the Falmouth Village Green and is sponsored by the Falmouth Track Club. Part of the race traces the Falmouth Road Race course. The men’s and women’s winners each receive $1,500.

97. Centerville Old Home Week 5K Road Race And Walkathon

Description: This 3-mile race starts at the Centerville Elementary School and finishes at Covell Beach along Craigville Beach Road to the east of Craigville Beach. It usually takes place the second or third week of Aug. More than 150 contestants participate in age groups ranging from 13 and younger to 69. A kids’ race and a 3-mile walkathon are also encompassed in the event.

Description: Sponsored by the Falmouth Track Club, this 1-mile race always takes place on the Sunday after Labor Day. The emphasis here is more on fun than competition.

100. Johnny Kelley Road Race

Description: This late July race is for competitive and recreational runners. It’s named for the recently deceased legend who ran more Boston Marathons than anyone: Johnny Kelley, Runner’s World’s “Runner of the Century.” Choose the 5K course, or run the double loop for the 10K distance. Both are certified by the USATF. More than 100 awards are given, including those presented to the top three runners overall in male and female divisions in both distances and to the top three runners in the seven age divisions.

Description: The Brew Run is a great warm-up for the Falmouth Road Race, for both runners and spectators. The 5.2-mile race is sponsored by the Woodshed Bar/Brewster Chowder House to benefit the Brewster Fire and Rescue Department. The race is followed by an awards and raffle party at the Woodshed. To register send a SASE to the Woodshed, Box 967, Brewster, MA 02631. It is held the second Saturday in Aug.

103. Irish Pub Road Race

Description: Sponsored by the Irish Pub in West Harwich, this annual 5.25-mile road race, begun in 1976, takes place the first Saturday in Aug to raise money for the Harwich Ambulance Fund. It begins and ends at the Irish Pub on Route 28, West Harwich, where a post-race party is held with an awards ceremony and live entertainment. The entry fee is $15; $20 on race day.

104. Nett–Falmouth Sprint

Description: The annual Falmouth Sprint, staged alongside Vineyard Sound and run through Falmouth Heights, is a 33-mile swim, 9-mile bike, and 3.1-mile run. The first 4 miles of the bike stage hug the ocean, and the 3.1-mile run takes you along the prestigious Falmouth Road Race course. The event, part of the New England Triathlon Tour, takes place in late July. The entry fee is $50 for ages 17 and under and $75 for pros and those older than 18.
