Description: Cathy’s Country Home is a country-style house 5 miles east of Lincoln Square in which fine home furnishings for every room of your house are displayed on three floors. Each room setting is completely decorated with all the details that complete a room, not just the main furniture. Nooks and crannies can be found throughout the house, especially on the third floor, so be sure not to miss any rooms. Cathy’s Country Home opened in 1991, and although it’s a bit out of town, most tourists who visit the store end up returning on subsequent trips to Gettysburg. Closed Tuesday.

Description: This charming shop located on the square beside the Gettysburg Hotel displays beautiful examples of European fine gifts every day of the week. Among the many choices are German nutcrackers, teddy bears, dolls, handcrafted Santas, glass ornaments, chess sets, jewelry, Swiss music boxes, Russian lacquer boxes, and numerous different styles and types of nesting dolls.

Description: The name of this shop certainly is right on the money. Porcelain dolls and Native American art and crafts take up a good amount of the space, and you’ll also find a large selection of Keystone candles, Americana crafts, display plates, garden knickknacks, gnomes, and a wealth of other unique goods. And that’s just on the porch and in the first room you enter. In a second room is an area that contains living- and dining-room sets and the “Back Room,” where you can pick up some great bargains. McDannell’s, which is closed on Wednesday, is located just east of the U.S. Route 15 interchange with U.S. Route 30 (York Road).

Description: This small shop has an eclectic mix of just what its name implies. Fashion includes a fabulous selection of handbags, both designer and name brand and day and evening styles, as well as handmade jewelry and an assortment of lotions and soaps. Original artwork, handcrafted furniture, and various displays of home accents make up the accessories available for your home, and kid accessories include new and lightly used clothes for sizes infant to 2T, kid-size furniture pieces, and a nice array of gifts.

Description: If you’re an aficionado of contemporary art, be sure to stop by this place, which is located about 5 miles west of the square. The outside of the property is decorated with traditional lawn and garden ornaments, and inside the store you’ll find modern art and pottery, much of it in southwestern or Egyptian style. The pottery runs the gamut from large, tall vases that look like Egyptian water pitchers to smaller eclectic works. You’ll also find statues of cacti, tin men, wooden Indians, and cowboys. Once you visit, you’ll probably want to stop by frequently, since new stock is always arriving at this fun store that’s open daily.

Description: Although not a large store, Fiddle Faddles has beautiful handcrafted folk art and primitives. Owners Dick and Carol Cole have run Fiddle Faddles since its opening in 1997, and many of the items in the store are handcrafted by one of them. Fiddle Faddles is closed on Tuesday.

Description: Jill’s House has two sides to it, so be sure to see all the cool stuff here. There are primitive and Americana gifts, lots of examples of folk art on the walls and as knickknacks, Boyds Bears, Vanmark Civil War figurines, Maple City Pottery stoneware adorned with Gettysburg farm scenes, Williraye collectibles, and Longaberger baskets and accessories, including those that are hard to find since they’ve been “retired.” Take time to notice the thickness of the Civil War–era walls as you walk from one side of the house to the other. Owners Sandy and Irv Tarner opened Jill’s House in November 2002, and the store is usually closed on either Monday or Tuesday.

T&S Gifts and Mementos is open daily, and it’s owned by Strickland Enterprises, a family-owned and -operated business that has served Gettysburg shoppers since 1970.

Description: Battlefield Souvenirs sits in a late 19th-century brick building between its two sister stores, Stoneham’s Armory (see the Military Memorabilia Shops section of the GNMP chapter) and Habitat (see this chapter’s Fine Gifts and Home Accents section). T-shirts, baseball caps, toy soldiers, and other Gettysburg memorabilia join educational games, puzzles, and cards to create a huge selection of souvenirs for kids and adults to enjoy poring over. I especially like to stop and read the many plaques that line both sides of the walls as I climb the stairs. Upstairs you’ll find a variety of country crafts and dolls among the interesting items on display.

Description: The Blue & Grey is owned by Strickland Enterprises, a family-owned and -operated Gettysburg-based business that does the custom screen printing and embroidery found on many of the T-shirts sold here and in their other shops in town. Besides the huge assortment of T-shirts that covers the shelves along the entire perimeter of Blue & Grey, you’ll also find hats, flags, and other Gettysburg memorabilia. There’s even a room dedicated to children’s clothes and appropriate memorabilia.

Description: This shop is located at the Dobbin House, the oldest house in Gettysburg, and it’s set up to remind you of a general store. Here you’ll discover souvenirs, tinware, jams, jellies, foodstuffs, dolls, and much more. It’s easy to while away some time here before or after enjoying the great food served at the Dobbin House’s tavern or fine-dining restaurant. Description: In business since 1999, Flex & Flannigan’s has souvenirs in the front of the shop, and then it’s all clothes, clothes, and more clothes in the next three rooms up the stairs. There are T-shirts with all kinds of messages on them and sweatshirts in all kinds of styles and sizes. Although packed with merchandise, the store has a tiered effect that makes the area seem large, with plenty of room to browse the racks. Open late into the evening in summer.

Description: The partners who own these shops keep each location chock-full. The store at 213 Steinwehr used to house the Conflict Museum, and the store at 27 Steinwehr was formerly called Bases Loaded. The partners changed the name to reflect that there’s lots more here than baseball-card collections. Most noticeable are the abundance of T-shirts for sale. More than 350 styles are available, and they are displayed everywhere, even as you go up the staircase to the rooms above. The store at 213 Steinwehr has a more orderly layout, with a wide range of souvenirs on display as well as T-shirts and leather vests and jackets.
