Description: Opened in April 2005, Artworks features the work of local and regional artists. The front of the store contains paintings, pottery, and fine gifts. Handmade quilts are on display, and the lady who makes some of them is often sitting in the shop sewing as she minds the store on Wednesday. Owner Linda Atiyeh, who also owns Gallery 30 (see next write-up) is enthusiastic about the artists whose works she displays. A room in the back has a good selection of T-shirts bearing original designs. This fun and visually stimulating gallery is open daily.

Description: Gallery 30 has been operating since 1978. Current owner Linda Atiyeh took over in August 2007, and previous owners Lois Starkey and William Gilmartin had run the place since 1993. The work of local and regional artists is displayed throughout the gallery in the varied forms of paintings, fiber art, pottery, blown glass, contemporary crafts, handmade jewelry, and other mediums of fine art. Be sure to check out the children’s section in the back of the store, where you’ll find toys, board and card games, and educational and fun games and puzzles. There’s also a nice selection of currently released books along the left wall of Gallery 30, which is open daily.

Description: Just Jennifer is actually two stores; each store has its own entrance. The gallery showcases Native American and silver jewelry, fine art from more than 40 artists, gifts, candles, housewares, pottery, glassware, spa and bath products, and gourmet foods. The walls of the staircase and the second floor of the gallery contain the fine art that’s for sale, and no one younger than age 16 is allowed upstairs without adult supervision. The downstairs area of the gallery groups the rest of the offerings in eye-catching displays. The frame shop offers custom framing and has more than 2,000 frame samples in stock. The gallery is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and the frame shop is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Description: Items made of stained glass in all shapes and sizes shimmer in Wentz’s window display, beckoning you inside, and owner Bonnie Wentz is likely to be the one greeting you as you enter. Bonnie opened this working stained-glass studio in 1982, and custom work is de rigueur here. You’ll be able to admire glass bead jewelry, stained-glass sun catchers, candle lamps, wind chimes, and many more unique gifts. Custom-designed windows, lamps, and cabinet doors show Bonnie’s breadth of experience, knowledge Bonnie imparts to students through workshops held in the studio. Supplies and the tools needed to make your own stained-glass masterpiece are available, and Bonnie also sells patterns. The studio is open every day but Sunday, when all you can do is admire the cool stuff in the front window.

Description: Here you’ll find artwork concerning the American Civil War, with art available for all price ranges. You’ll be able to choose from limited-edition prints, canvas-edition prints, giclees, original paintings, and shadow boxes. Art can be bought framed, or you can pick out a print and a frame that will be uniquely yours. Sculpture, books, music, and replicas of Civil War–era weaponry are also available. Description: The Adams County library system has seven branches and a bookmobile. The library in Gettysburg is the system’s main branch, and programs for children and the community at large are offered. Children’s programs include story times for preschoolers and a book club for middle-school students, and all levels of computer courses are offered free to members of the community. The Gettysburg branch is open seven days a week, and the library system’s bookmobile runs five days a week and visits an average of eight locations a day. A bookmobile first started operating in the county in 1946, and the current bookmobile is the system’s fifth. The 28-foot vehicle holds around 3,000 volumes of books, and it also brings videos, DVDs, and books on tape to county residents.

Description: This member-supported nonprofit organization has been in existence since 1939, and its purpose is to cultivate an interest in good music and dance. The association provides opportunities for its members to attend performances by outstanding professional artists that are held in the Gettysburg Area Middle School and High School auditoriums. Members may also attend for free the concerts of associations in Chambersburg and Waynesboro in Pennsylvania and Hagerstown and Westminster in Maryland. The association also conducts community outreach programs, such as in-school visits by performers.
