Owners Jacky and Kitty Rose began the store in 1997, and it’s open every day but Sunday. Three-quarters of the store is dedicated to natural-food selections, while the rest of the area holds health-related items. Also stocked are environmentally safe cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, organic personal-hygiene items, books on subjects from cooking to healthy healing, and natural pet foods. When buying bulk products, shoppers can bag just the amount they want.

Description: This eclectic shop features the works of a consortium of women artists known as the Spirited Ladies. The group was cofounded by local artists Sue Hudson and Martha Wolf, and its mission is to inspire, unite, and promote the artistic endeavors of women. Sue and Martha share a passion for beading, and the shop shows off the beautiful jewelry, clothing, embroidery, and other handcrafts they create and enhance with their beads of glass, gemstones, and crystal. Works on display by other artists might include stained glass, jewelry, photography, home accessories, gourmet cakes, and more. The Spirited Ladies Shoppe is closed on Monday.

Description: This small shop has only five tables, but it carries 49 flavors of milk shakes and malts. Cones, sundaes, ice-cream sodas, and banana splits round out the ice-cream treats, while soups, sandwiches, salads, wraps, and quesadillas are available for those who like to eat before they snack. Look up and a little to the left of the entrance to Cannonball Old Tyme Malt Shoppe and you’ll see how the shop got its name. Yep, that’s a projectile from the Battle of Gettysburg embedded in the wall. Cannonball is a family-run business that’s open seasonally; during the season it’s closed on Tuesday. If you’ve never had a phosphate or a malt, this is a great place to treat your taste buds.

Description: This small shop is across from the Gettysburg Tour Center at the entrance to Old Gettysburg Village. All that’s sold here is great-tasting fudge, and the no-frills store consists of a glass case where the fudge is displayed and an area where the fudge is made, which is in plain view. Since there’s only one thing to buy here, and the fudge comes in only six flavors, you can get your fudge quickly and be on your way, happily satisfied and avoiding long lines elsewhere. Garrahy’s Fudge Kitchen is open daily.

Description: The pretzels here are hand rolled and baked in a brick oven, giving them a just-baked taste. The store consists of a counter and some shelves that hold boxes of hard pretzels. Soft pretzels are sold out of a large cardboard box on the counter. The whole operation occurs at this building, from the making of the dough to the rolling and the baking of the pretzels. If you’re curious how it’s done, tours are cheerfully given. Pretzels can be shipped throughout the country, and once you taste these goodies, you’ll be placing your order.

Description: The first Kilwin’s was opened by Don and Katy Kilwin in 1947 in Petoskey, Michigan. Today there are franchises in 10 states. Sisters and co-owners Paige Levan and Polly Parone opened the Gettysburg Kilwin’s, the only one in Pennsylvania, in 1993. Since then they have been treating the people in Gettysburg to homemade chocolates, fudge, and ice cream daily from the ground floor of a frame house built more than a century ago. If you’re lucky, you can watch the chocolate being made in the shop; the heavenly smells alone make the trip worthwhile.

This old-fashioned ice-cream shop sells Sunset brand ice cream, which is made in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The bright colors outside are carried inside, where there are about five small tables that give you a place to enjoy your ice cream while cooling off in the store’s air-conditioning. Outside there are picnic tables for those who prefer to people watch as they enjoy their treats. Sunset accepts cash only and is open daily.

Description: Here you can enjoy historical art created by Dale Gallon, a well-known artist in the Civil War market for more than 25 years. Dale has more than 100 images in his complete works, which include paintings and limited-edition prints. He has published four limited-edition prints each year since 1980, and his work is displayed in many prominent places, including the Pentagon and the U.S. Army War College. Known for his historical accuracy and attention to detail, Dale identifies important people and landmarks on the upper and lower borders of his prints. He also employs a staff historian, who is responsible for researching every detail of the scene depicted and writing a historical essay that accompanies each print.
