What can Haiti expect in foreign investment other then sweatshop jobs, which I bet offer options to impoverished people not available elsewhere? Certainly most of us admire the resiliency of Haitians (well maybe not some of the racist elements in the DR). They have been badly let down by their elites and their governments for many decades now. Greed, violence, corruption and neglect being what they have had to endure. As Haitians migrate elsewhere and as others get to know them positive commentaries usually follow. But Haiti itself has an image problem.
Haiti lacks stability and has a bad image. No one is going to feel obligated for what others did during the Cold War. As to US military involvement during the earthquake. Unlike most independent Caribbean nations Haiti lacks a governing infrastructure that works. Were the Haitian governing apparatus capable of handling logistics during that hectic period? It was the weaknesses of the Haitian governing structures which allow others to walk in and exploit it. The damage done by the UN "peacekeepers: being noted.
Yes I know that conditions of Haiti put a lot of stress on overseas based Haitians who always have to hear negative comments, but Haiti is really an anomaly in this hemisphere in terms of its backwardness. Look at any index of socio economic development and Haiti trails.
While it certainly had a hard beginning, being forced to pay off France, having other nations intervene, Haitians must admit that its abysmal government and the crassness, greed, and abusiveness of its elites has also played a role. Haiti and the DR started off in the same place. Both suffered extreme intervention and mischief making by US interests, yet the DR has left Haiti in the dust. Admit to this please.
When Haitians arrive into surrounding Caribbean nations in large numbers it does become the business of others. Look at The Bahamas where Haitians are now around 20% of the population. many living in conditions long abandoned by other Bahamians at least 2 generations ago.
