Let's leave Birmingham to the Alabama board.

Back to our Atlanta crime statistics. What's real and what isn't?

I think new Atlantans who move here from smaller cities; must do simple things like not leaving visible things in your car, be aware of your surroundings, and don't travel alone. Unfortunately, there are people in large metropolitan areas that don't have your best interest in mind. Be smart and proactive to avoid crime happening to you. I am also leery of any crime report since Atlanta is actually only 470,000 in population but the metro area is nearly 6 million. GSU taught me that the grid and ratios those studies use are not the most reliable.

You realize gentrification doesn't get rid of crime, it just puts it down the streets?

Also it displace people most of which overwhelming aren't criminals.

I have been told that most of the victims of car break-in and auto thefts at places like Lenox are people from out of town. Also most of the thieves are folks who drive in from other areas. So you've got a situation where neither the vics nor the perps are local.

Great post. I am here alone (for now) so I don't go out at alone after dark. I had company this past weekend and it was great to be able to go out after dark. I cleaned my car out before I moved here and it stays cleaned out. I was talking to my Dad today, (who lives in a small town) and even he said to me to make sure I stay aware at all times.

As for statistics, I do think some of these are kicking the can down the street and sometimes reporting parameters change. (Not saying that happened here) There really are not standard reporting for crime stats (across the country) and I hope those are implemented. There is so much variation.

Are you suggesting that people who live in ghettos are "insane"?

Until the murder rate is updated daily on the local news like it is in Baltimore, Atlanta has a long ways to go.

Baltimore is on track to break the record (per capita) set last year and 1993 again. Atlanta nor any of the other metro counties are on record to break their previous murder rates.

Give me a break.

Because some folks assume under "false scenarios" that if they push people to the suburbs they won't never see them again. Like the suburbs don't hang in the city. Like the suburbs don't know where the money is at.

I know you going by word of mouth, but it further exposes one of my points. Specially Lennox.
