Speaking of which, I find it so irritating when the media says things like: "The flight that is missing has three Americans on board." So we shouldn't care about the 220+ other passengers of other nationalities?! I wonder what a furor there would be if the media said, "There were 110 men on board." This, of course, implies that the women and children are worthless. How about just leaving it as, "There were 230 people on board" without going into detail about how many are Americans, as if that somehow makes those passengers special?!

I see no problem with mentioning how many Americans are on board. Of course the American media is going to mention how many Americans are on the plane because their audience is American. I'm sure the other countries' media does the same exact thing about their own people.
The Malaysian govt is coming across as incompetent in all this. I'm not saying they actually are, but it's the impression they are putting out.
Yeah, although I could understand the chaos. It could be because they have to run around following all kinds of "clues" reported to them and so far, none has proven to be true. For example, there was an email that sufaced from an oil rig worker who supposedly saw a huge plane exploded in the air above the water off the coast of Vietnam. But experts were skeptical about this account because of the distance between the plane and the oil worker. Plus they've searched the water below the supposed sighting and no debris was found. So clues like that could certainly sound helpful in the beginning until it turned out false. I think that's one of the reasons they haven't been forthcoming since they don't want to give out too much unverified information that will only make them look even more incompetent.

There is plenty of coverage on American media. But for example right now there is live coverage of 2 buildings collapsed due to an explosion in NYC and now is more immediate as they need to look for survivors, etc.
Still Turkey is known as a destination for Iranians, whether refugees, asylum seekers, or immigrants, it borders Iran and it is on Europe's doorstep. In fact in total flight duration time takes about no more than five hours, from Iran to Germany.
No doubt there are people in Turkey who would have arranged a passport for the Iranian man, and get him on his way to Europe.
No need for him to be in South East Asia. Of course only if the Iranian intended to go to Australia.

Or if this was on American Soil or off of our waters.
Let's face it: no one on earth has the level of "civilization" that we have here. From our constant news feeds and ability to almost track your very thoughts, all the way to processes that we follow when planes ticket, board, take off, fly, and then land. We do all of these things better than our nearest competitor, and Malaysia isn't even on our playing field. It's still a 3rd world country sadly: when it rains, 200 people die and 10,000 go missing. This plane will be found when the US or Germany or perhaps Japan takes an interest.

The American news media has always been ridiculously self-centered. If you want international news, get it from an international source. As a matter of fact if you want any news, get it from an international. CNN, MSNBC, Fox, they are all same garbage. They report what they get paid to report, and that is all.
