It appears that Mike Scioscia will protest today's game.
In the top of the 7th innings Astro's pitcher Paul Clemens walked Chris Ianetta to put 2 runners on base. The Astros brought in Wesley Wright who did not face a hitter before he was replaced by Hector Ambriz.
The rules state that a pitcher must face at least one hitter after being announced.
The protest is rendered moot as the Angels come back to win.

Actually, the rule is that at least one batter must complete his turn at bat before a pitcher can be removed.
The real question in my mind is, why did Porter bring in another pitcher, since the manager must surely have been aware of the rule. He obviously thought there was a justification for the change, which was apparently communicated to the umpire.
There is a new rule, which appears in the MLB website, but not in older versions of the rules:
3.05(d) If a pitcher who is already in the game crosses the foul line on his way to take his
place on the pitcher’s plate to start an inning, he shall pitch to the first batter until
such batter is put out or reaches first base, unless the batter is substituted for, or the
pitcher sustains an injury or illness which, in the judgment of the umpire-in-chief,

That would not apply to this case, but there apparently IS a new rule governing pitchers and substitute batters. However, that rule was in place in the 2012 version on the MLB website, but missing from the 2011 version.
Maybe Porter said "He's ambidextrous, and I thought he could pitch RH, too, but now he tells me his right arm is sore, so he can't pitch to this substitute batter." That would constitute an eligible injury.

The umpire, Fieldin Culbreth (he should have been an excellent defensive short stop or something), will be suspended for 2 games. The rest of the crew will be fined.
Got me thinking. Suppose that you bring in a pitcher and for whatever reasons decide you want someone else instead before the pitcher you brought in has faced a batter.
You visit the mound, step off, turn around and step back on again. That is two visits to the mound in one inning and now by the rules you must replace the pitcher. Does this rule trump the rule requiring the pitcher to face at least one batter? If so it would be a legal way to avoid the Astros problem of last night. And if not, what would stop a manger from making three dozen visits to the mound to talk with the pitcher?

Weird day for pitchers....the Cardinals Shelby Miller gave up a lead off single against the Rockies yesterday and then retired the next 27 straight.

That still does not explain how a man who does not know this rule (which every schoolboy knows) gets to be the manager of a major league baseball team and remain as such for six weeks without becoming acquainted with that rule, and even successfully win a few games.
Cards/Mets start at 6.05 instead of 7.05 because ESPN gets to dictate baseball scheduling to their underling, MLB. Beltran loses a ball lin a horrendous 6:45 sun field, giving the Mets three runs. When will MLB grow the balls to refuse to play these 5 and 6 oclock games to suit the scheduling of the networks. If one bank of lights goes out, a game is delayed for hours because of light conditions, but if the networks want games played in horrible light conditions, MLB says "What time will the Brinks truck be here?"
