News flash....its also warm in the northeast in the baseball season. And we also have beaches and plenty of other outdoor things to do.
Like I've said, the southern "warm weather" states have no problem selling out events like WWE wrestling and NASCAR races. Its real sports that they have trouble supporting.

i just think there is generally a greater passion in the NE and MW - though again that is a generalization but mostly true
I almost don't want to reply to such an ignorant statement but why not. You do know the Rays don't play in Tampa right? They play in a horrible stadium in St Pete. About an hour drive from my house. I would rather record the game and watch it on TV so I can fast forward through all the boring crap, and turn a 2-3 hour game to a 1 hour one. Plus, there is a lot more to do in Tampa than going to strip clubs.
There are so many more factors that effect a fans mentality and why sports are not as big in Tampa and other sunbelt cities as in the NE. History is one thing. The oldest Pro sports team in Tampa is the Bucs, formed in the 70s. That isn't very old at all. The Rays were formed in 1998 and sucked for their first 10 years of existence. Hard to have a large fan base like that after only 3 years of being relevant. The Transplants are another thing. Not very many people here were born here. And a lot of the people who were are fans of their parents teams from elsewhere. Also, unlike NE cities, sunbelt cities are spread out with little public transportation making going to games a pain. And finally, 12% unemployment in the Tampa Bay area. People can't afford to go to games all the time. So yes, there IS an excuse for Rays fans to not make it to the games and support the team.
Like I said, Floridians have no problem packing Daytona raceway to yee-haw for a bunch of guys driving in circles. And I would bet that Rays tickets, compared to most teams, are reasonably priced and definitely cheaper than NASCAR tickets. And they sure pack the stadiums for college football....and I'll bet a Rays ticket is much cheaper than FSU or UF tickets.

People from all over the country go to Daytona for Races, not just Floridians. College Football games pack out in Florida because they have history and are usually great teams with rosters full of homegrown players. The Rays are 10 years old and are just starting to be relevant.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. But there are reasons for why that is.

And on college football, I believe PSU has consistently drawn the highest number of attendance for homes games of college teams, but also have the largest stadium attendance wise
Oakland is bad...they shouldn't even be looking to build a new stadium out there....their best option would be to bring the A's back home to Philly...Philly is the largest market with only one baseball team.

Exactly. I respect the passion of sports fans in NE cities. But to say there is no excuse for a team like the Rays to not have the same kind of fans is just wrong.

Nah, that won't be necessary since there's been another AL franchise set up there. (The last, and perhaps it was the only, time we saw two teams in the same league playing in the same city was in 1957, with the Giants and Dodgers.)
On the other hand, there might be a 13-year layover in some other city!
