The Mavs gambled and lost on this one - I don't necessarily fault the logic (aging player, some injury concerns, desire for a long term deal, etc)
However, it just didn't pan out the way they thought it would
Nash just finished his 7th season in phoenix, averaging just over 77 regular season games a year and close to 10 playoff games a season (while logging a ton of minutes) - a pair of MVP awards - has led the league in assists 5 of those seasons - even this last season he was still pretty good and at worst statistically equivalent to his last year in dallas
It's very similar to the decision the suns made with Amare - with guaranteed contracts they just didn't like the risk associated with the length & dollar amounts
I woiuld tend to disagree. The Suns defensive liabilities are in large part while they were NEVER serious contenders for the NBA title. Steve Nash is a large part why the Suns are a poor defensive ballclub.
Steve Nash has delivered a lot of highlight reel passes and shots but not much in the way of serious titles. The Suns window on a championship runs has basically closed. The Mavs haven't been successful in the playoffs since their 2006 title run so at best it's a wash.
The first game the Mavs have lost at home in these playoffs. It looks like the Thunder also have a bench unlike what some have proclaimed on here. They are a legitimate contender; this should be another good series.
I don't come away from this game feeling the Thunder are a better team than the Mavs. I come away feeling like the Mavericks had a poor defensive effort particularly on the boards where Collison killed them with offensive rebounds. Even with this the Mavs had chance to win this game down the stretch.
Westbrook's inability to distribute the ball from the point guard position and his inconsistent jump shot are going to continue to be an issue for the Thunder.
If Deshawn Stevenson is not hitting his jumper, he's a liability. If Brendon Haywood is not reobounding, he's a liability. Both of these guys can be inconsistent.
Overall the Mavs where not as sharp offensively in game 2 and played poor defense.

I didn't say the Thunder were better than the Mavs. I think they are very close and it will be an interesting series.
And if a team has a poor defensive showing, I think that I tend to give a lot of that credit to the other team making them have a poor defensive showing.

Tonight the Mavs played well on both sides of the ball. Too much firepower. I had a feeling that the Thunder comeback will come up short as they lacked poise down the stretch with 2:30 minutes left and down by only 6. They came up empty for 3 straight possessions jacking up bad shots. I guess that happens when you're a young team.
stunned that the thunder came out flat in their first home game
