There is an argument to be made that Bobby Orr made kids actually play hockey, there was a boom of rinks built and surge of Hockey participation during the Orr years that never subsided. He permentaly changed the sports landscape. (Admittedly part of the rink boom was due to suburban sprawl making the old rinks unaccessible)) On the other hand Brady gets more people to turn on their TVs but youth participation in football is still dropping in New England.

And Hockey attendance is pretty good too.

In 2014 8,800 showed up to the MIAA basketball championships (6 games) while 17,500 showed up to the 5 Hockey championship games.

Bruins out rate the celtics on TV every year. Bruins beat the Celtics by 10 points in their respective game 7's of the finals. Numbers dont back up that the Celtics are more popular.

I wasn't even alive during the Bobby Orr era, but I did watch old games and stuff growing up and somewhat idolized Orr, made me want to be a defenseman to a degree.

That being said, I do not EVER hear anyone talking about Bobby Orr. I hear Tom Brady, I hear David Ortiz, Ted Williams, Pedro Martinez, Rob Gronkowski, Larry Bird, Kyrie Irving.... never hear anything about Bobby Orr.

I wasn't alive either that's what I've been told but there are probably external factors like suburbanization and the growth of all organized sport (over say pond hockey) that also contributed to the boom in rinks and Hockey enrollment in the 70s.

This has been my experience both in general and in Boston.

Did nobody see this week's Globe Dan Shaunessy story headline at the top of the sports section: "Little Buzz for the Bruins" after the first pre-season home game?

Haven't read it yet, but a radio host said the influential writer claims the Bruins are much closer to the soccer Revolution than the Celtics in popularity right now.

Lol that is so false it's not even funny.
Dan would say anything for clicks, 16,300 people went to that game that's a decent number for a Revs regular season game.

I won't like Bobby Orr like you did when you were a kid with like 4 channels and you won't like Tom Brady like I do cause you weren't a kid watching Brady. So if you're not in you're late 20s or early 30's you have no clue. I can belittle you're age too.
it's actually "your age" but no matter.......... my generation experienced both and can make an accurate statement, its just the way it is ..............truth be told, i was and still am a celtics fan and it pissed me off that everyone loved the Bruins and few much paid attention to the celtics who played in front of a half empty garden in the 60's until playoff time, they won it 9-10 years in that decade. With Orr, the Bruins games were a family event, every game, your entire family got in the living room and watched.
