You're, seriously, the fifth person I know who has moved to California from Reno.

I never understood the appeal myself?

It's barren, windswept and full of yokels. They've been trying really hard to make it another version of Boise or Ashland, but -- to me -- it's just Reno, and always will be.

Reno is boring, dry and windy as hell. We lived around 600' above town and the wind just pummelled our yard, patio furniture would slide all over and break apart when it hit the deck railing. At one point our patio umbrella became airborne and we never did find it, for all I know it's still floating around Reno somewhere. People will tell you that snow doesn't stick to the ground in Reno, well that's sort of true for downtown but unless you live in the flattest part of Reno you will get snow and it will stick. The City didn't plow our area and our lousy HOA didn't provide plowing either so we had to go in with our neighbors and contract with a snow removal company so that we could get out of our driveway. Utility bills were really expensive, I'm talking 3 times what we pay in Sacramento, and the 2 hour drive to Sacramento ends up being a 10 hour nightmare if you get stuck in a storm on the pass. I don't know why people try to make it sound so wonderful, but on the CD Reno forum the regulars will report you to a moderator if you dare to criticize "their city"

I have a college roommate who is from CA and she moved to Reno years ago. She describes it just as you do. Not sure why she and her husband stay, although they love skiing and the cost of living is certainly lower.

As far as the Republican party, it's changed and is no longer the party it was even a couple of decades ago.

The white population continues to vote pretty much 50/50 for Republicans and Democrats. Depending on the candidate it will tip one way or the other. African-Americans overwhelmingly vote Democrat (over 90%). This is a given. Latinos vote about two thirds Democrat - that can vary a bit depending on candidate. Asians vote about 70% Democrat. This doesn't vary much regardless who is in the White House. The white population (that 50/50 split group) has decreased from 57% in 1990 to 38% today. The percentage of minorities who are eligible to vote has risen over time as more are born here or become naturalized. Given voting trends among the groups it stands to reason that the Republicans were eventually going to get to the point they can't win a state wide office. It is changing demographics brought on by domestic migration and immigration over the past 30 or 40 years. It was inevitable. What has happened in California is now starting to occur in other places around the country. Texas and Arizona will probably soon join Virginia as a "purple" state for the same reasons. Florida too. Other states will follow (look at how close the governor's race was in once solidly Republican Georgia).
Why aren't the Republicans asking how they can win more votes of Latinos and Asians? Long time ago, they used to have much more of the Asian and Latino vote B.W. (Before Wilson).

Anti-communism as a rallying cry isn't working to animate Asian Americans, particularly for 2nd and 3rd generation ones. That was back in the Cold War days.

Because they went way to the right. Like extreme right. I don't care to choose between alt right extremism and socialism but those are my choices in CA.

3 we have A LOT of immigrants both legal and illegal. Dem politicians pander and cater to them to get them to vote dem and boy is it working.
4 immigrants and millennial's are having a lot of babies. Right now we have those babies grown up (2nd generation) and they are all indoctrinated to vote blue.
5 census wise whites are now 3rd in population and more are leaving every day.

There you have it. The perfect storm of overwhelming blue wave. Which is not good for any state. There are no checks and balances here and Ca will suffer for it indefinitely
Are you sure that democrats 'cater and pander' to immigrants, or is it just the mean spirited things that Trump keeps trying to do to immigrants that makes them reluctant to support Republicans? My son's fiance is from Hong Kong, she and her parents are citizens and were Republicans until Trump started talking about not allowing immigrants to sponsor their family members. They said the ability to bring other family members to the US is so important to the Chinese that many will immigrate to Canada rather than the US because of this. As a result of Trump's announcement about this they all changed their registration to Democrat and voted a straight Democratic ticket in the midterms.

Why aren't the Democrats asking how they can win more votes from whites? After all, whites are the only ones who can actually change allegiances in an election unlike Latinos and Asians who are very solid Dem supporters. Those "reliable" Dem voters are basically just activated for turn out on every election.

Do you have a lock on your front door? Do you just leave it wide open 24/7?

If you lock your front door you're racist !!
