Me too. I believe my IOUs were in the early nineties. Had a restaurant and we fed alot of CDF firefighters during fires. They ran up a rather large bill and we did not get paid for a couple of months. Not an easy thing to do when your profit margin is what it is in the restaurant business.
by the way just got back from Texas. We bought property there and will work our way there during the next year. We spent 2 months there. I could post a picture and people would thing they were in California.

Adding some more fuel to this fire. Among the current cabal who run this state (both overtly and de facto) resides a faction who show deep disdain for The South. I realize California was a Union State during the CW, but only barely. So, by that token it was really a Border State in practice. Anyhow, I will hereby slay yet another incorrect stereotype regarding some of the states Californians are currently moving to in droves:

(If you don't want to log into the NYT site, what the article said was that the Old South no longer has a severe gap in racial achievement in public schools.)

Moved here to Oklahoma last year and after one visit back on Thanksgiving know I'd NEVER go back to California. I don't really care about the local politics, so that wasn't a factor. No spanish in sight here and that is. But I can buy enough food for the month with a couple hundred dollars including adding to the larder. And the water coming FROM the tap is delicious and I don't even need the britta. And while the lawn is a PAIN, its about two lots worth of lawn in the IE. And while I need to get a car here, I love the lack of hussle and bussle. And no problems from smog. No smog....

Its all about what you want and what you like. I didn't come here expecting it all to be perfect and there are things I don't like. But just the same, the stuff I do certainly balances it out. As for summer, well, yesterday the temperature here and in Riverside were the same, humidity not off by much. And the triple digits here are only for a few months. The storms are spectacular and the snow was only twice, with an ice storm in December. The second one was in March and melted entirely like it had never been in 24 hours. Spring and Fall are beautiful and there is lots of trees, and green, and when you drive out of town there is open land.

If this doesn't appeal to you please don't come. I think that proviso should come with anyones feelings about the place they relocated and intend to stay.

I agree with everything you say. When you do move to another state, don't try to make it the same as the one you left and don't keep reminding people how much you loved thus and so in wherever. Each state is different, be ready to embrace the good where you are living..

IT really is tempting to see the values and benefits of another state. HOWEVER, I just love the ocean and mild climate so much I may have to tough out the poor politics and the tax situation.

I am very happy that you found the place that you love. That is probably what living is all about?

The city I left, Irvine, CA

& the town I moved to Keller, TX

Best Places to Live 2009 - Top 100: City details: Keller, TX - from MONEY Magazine

Just compare the stats and you will clearly see that the only thing better in Irvine was the weather and believe me I can handle a little weather here in TX. We actually like having 4 mild seasons versus 1 in CA. We loved our home in Irvine but are far happier with our new, less stressful life in TX.

Is that because minority achievement went up or because white achievement went down? My guess is somewhere in between, seeing how southern educational achievement still tends to lag behind its northern counterparts. And what does "severe" mean? Is it now merely "substantial" or "significant" as opposed to "servere?" Is "severe" better or worse than "extreme" or "unconscionable"? Saying the educational gap is closing without explaining how or why it has closed, or to what degree it has closed, doesn't really mean much.

I live south of Miami, FL. Yesterday I parked next to a man and as we were getting out of our cars, the first thing he did was complain about the heat. The second thing he told me was he had just moved here from California.

And the third thing he said to you was "But having all this extra money from my house sale in California will allow me to enjoy a day water skiing from my new boat."
