I've not discussed the details of their choice with them ... but as glowingly as they speak of the natural beauty of their homes, forests, rivers and lakes ... they prefer to live and work here, rarely going back to Canada.
Their family members come here to visit them in the USA, too, rather than my neighbors going back to Canada for family gatherings.

I saw on a global climate map website a map of global sunshine and noticed that annual sunshine sharply increases in the West the further away from Canada you go. Wyoming has about the same temperatures as many parts of western Canada, but at the same time most of Wyoming gets 50% more sunshine in winter than even the sunniest place in all of Canada. (also in the west) Wyoming is somewhat similar in temperature to us but in they get almost 3 times the sun that Toronto gets in our dark winter months.
Also many U.S. states also give their residents more personal freedoms, like being able to buy beer in a gas station, being able to buy your own automotive A/C refridgerant cans in a place like WalMart and more relaxed laws on guns are but a few examples.
