They were not out yesterday (probably because of the heat). I will ask them today and report back. I may try to get a video of it.

I pass that area frequently but haven't seen the organized group that you mention. I've seen single panhandlers and I have given them a dollar or two from time to time. Aggression is not attractive when you are basically begging for money.

Saw a group at 16/MtHolly Huntersville a few weeks back. Already had my windows down ... Guy claimed they were collecting for a battered womens fund, but I forget the name. Didn't have any information in hand out form.

If any reporter or law enforcement wants to contact me, I have photos of the car and license plate of the guy who was picking up and dropping off new workers.

They are no longer working Tyvola. Maybe they read this forum?

Cool Boots

Don't forget firefighters who wave around boots for money. I think soliciting at traffic intersections is unsafe.

For the record, it is a crime to claim you are collecting money for a charity and then keep it or give to somewhere else.

Panhandling laws are not inforced. At the intersection where Sardis Rd. North runs into Independence Blvd. there is actually a sign stating it is illegal to solicit with the statute number of the law on it. I see panhandlers there all the time and cops drive past them.

Can a church that's violating the law to collect funds be on the up and up?

Today, one of the people in charge responded in a pretty hostile/aggressive manor when I informed him it was illegal to collect as they are.

I'm reminded of a CLS550 Mercedez-Benz (an $80k car) that I saw seized about a year ago from a pastor of a small local church, due debts unpaid by the church. It had been bought for him with the church money.

this may be the group that spoke extensively the last couple of months at the City Council meetings during the Citizens Open Forum session saying the CMPD was targeting them for harassment. The first month, they were told the issue would be investigated and someone would follow up with them. The second month, they were told no one recalled making that assurance. Now they are waiting again for an answer. More than one Council member said they knew of the good work the group was doing (involving helping find home and job placement for those coming out of jail and often needing substance abuse help). Unclear if there is a money issue with the group or a behavior issue with the group, such as aggressive tactics that are being mentioned here. Whatever the truth, it doesn't sound like anyone would be safe standing in a median in highway traffic. It also sounds like it could cause dangerous traffic problems. Also, if you have a complaint, I wouldn't write it here and hope a reporter reads it. I would put it in writing and e-mail it with attached video to a reporter and police.
There's a link to see the council video meetings and search them on citynewswatch.blogspot.com
I believe it was in last Monday night's meeting (Sept 26, 2011) and the month before.
