Hi All. I have recently decided to move to Charlotte from VA. I will be purchasing my first home in the Charlotte area. I have found a nice home for a great price in Plaza Shamrock - more specifically in Eastwood Park. The neighborhood appears to be nice, but I know looks can be deceiving. I am hoping to get the true story from you all. I have a friend in the NoDa area that assures me Plaza Shamrock is being gentrified as NoDa expands, but I remain skeptical. Any insight would be most appreciated!! Thanks so much!

Without knowing more specific addresses I cannot give specific opinion. The area from Plaza to N. Davidson is indeed seing more young people and young families. There are new homes abuilding there as well. These are good signs. I had a friend who lived a block north of Plaza with his wife and young daughter. They were pleased with the neighborhood though took care about going out at night and choosing which store to accustom. After they moved the house was on the market and it was broken into, with minimal damage and loss.
It is an affordable option for those who wish to be in-town, near uptown, in sight of uptown, and within walking distance of shops and such.
It appeals to a set such as my friend and is not the blandest choice; that would be suburbs with HOA and guaranteed uniformity of architecture, carcentric life, and drive, drive, drive.

Thanks for the info. The place I'm looking at is slightly southeast of plaza. Eastwood Drive and Academy Street. Thoughts?

It's been a while since I've been over there, but generally I'd say you should stay on the south side of Shamrock.

I know a few people that live over there - one's at Meadow & Anderson. I'm not sure where the other couple is, but know they're very close to my other friend. They haven't personally experienced break-ins, assault, or vandalism, more things like loud parties every so often, and people walking through their yards. There are reported assaults in that area, and theft. The crime map I found is confusing to use - maybe somebody could link a good one? These folks are purposefully investing there, and I'd imagine they're not the only ones. As long as people continue to buy to live there, it seems like the area will continue the upswing.

Hey - I live very near your new place in Plaza Shamrock. I've lived here for 10 years and really haven't had any problems. I will say that Academy is one of the rougher streets, but it's better closer to Anderson for sure. Hope this helps. The neighborhood association has picked up some speed recently so you might want to check that out. It's affordable, safe (enough) and diverse What's not to like! I think in many ways it's safer than NoDa because folks generally know who lives around them and NoDa has so many visitors.

Welcome!

Since you are purchasing it and not renting I will offer some very good advice. Before you BUY any house it is a smart move to visit it on any friday night around 10 until 1 am . Park your car and take a little walk for at least a block in each direction from the house. If you are moving into a land of nighttime zombies you will quickly find out. As far as a secure place to live I think it is what you see later at night that reveals the true story.PS. wear some good running shoes as you could find yourself running back to your car....GOOD safe neighborhoods don't have zombies walking around at night .BAD neighborhoods ALWAYS DO... The area you describe definitely needs the zombie test. good luck and welcome

You don't need to worry about zombie attacks in the area you are looking at, OP. Some people think they are going to be murdered if they ever set foot outside Ballantyne or Waxhaw.
