I thought the OP made explicit reference to peace and quiet. Oak Park has a bit of bustle.

Well, it really doesn't matter what either of us call it. It's their choice. I'm just pointing out that the phenomenon exists.

"Offended" is a little thin-skinned. But I agree that not everyone feels comfortable straying too far from home in choosing their associates. I don't think that makes them inferior in any way (every race does it, not just whites). But choosing not to hang out with someone versus harboring bitterness and false negative stereotypes are two different things. The latter is unhealthy.

Of course you might argue that the stereotypes are negative but not false. In that case I would disagree. It is a question of degree, of course, but I've found with pretty much every country I've lived in and every group that I've interacted with that the majority of people are pretty much the same. I though the great PBS show vis-a-vis (or whatever it was called) did a great job of bringing that to light (between U.S. and international community). Ignorance and false stereotypes are real things and they are prevalent in many corners.

OK, Can't resist this...Harmony, IL is off US 20 about 3 miles from the US 20 and I-90 interchange. This is between Marengo and Huntley. Very small, rurual town in So. McHenry county. Large lots, rolling hills and plenty of wooded areas. Not great for commuting into Chicago because of how far out it is, but you sure could find lots of peace in Harmony.

And I don't find it offensive that I can't move in next door?

As far as the Indiana side, Merrillville is probably the most diverse area. School systems isn't the best. You won't be interested in Miller Beach because it's part of Gary even though it is very very very nice.

It's easy to make that turn when looking for houses in Oak Park, since all of the ones pictures are out of reach for 99.9% of us.
