The prodigal was never adopted, he was always a son.
Always..... even before the writer of the John epistles declared..... Behold what manner of love that the Father as bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God.
From the mouth of most Christian's you will never hear them say they are sons of God, they are far more comfortable with confessing "I'm just a poor miserable sinner saved by grace" . So if that is the case, how the heck are they ever going to believe and identify with who they really are , the sons and daughters of God ?...

Actually, from the quote you're using from 1 John 3:1, the Greek word used is "Ï„Îκνα"(tekna), which means "child"; not "son(s)".
Jesus is believed by Christians to be God's "Only Begotten Son," which makes all the difference in the world. We are all his sons and daughters by virtue of the fact that He is the Creator of our spirits, i.e. the source of our life and created in His image. This particular Christian (yours truly) believes that Jesus was in a category all by himself, that God was His literal Father and Mary His literal mother, i.e. that He had a both divine and a mortal parent.

Interesting comment. In my church, we have a song that children start to learn when they are part of the Church's children's auxiliary. It's called "I Am a Child of God." That's what we focus on. In my religious experience, I've never been told that I was "just a poor miserable sinner saved by grace."
It's not just LDS children who sing this song, though. Adults sing it, too, including the Tabernacle Choir. I serve as a Sunday School teacher out at the Salt Lake Metropolitan Jail (or at least I do when there is no Covid-19). There are about 25 couples who do this with us. We split up and, over a period of a couple of hours, meet with groups of about 12 men each, in the various cell blocks. We always have an opening hymn before we begin class. The men get to pick the hymn we sing, and this one is their favorite. And let me tell you, it's quite the emotional experience just listening to these men sing it.
