Some interesting remembrances:

The "Sheik" and "Bobo Brazil" were legitimate wrestlers. Back then, each town had promoters and these guys would go all over the area wrestling for the various promoters. They would also do studio work where they would wrestle in front of a TV audience in the studio.

Do realize that Avco Broadcasting owned stations in Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, etc. and would show a lot of the same shows.

Also, so you remember that WHIO and WLWD showed tv shows from two different networks as there was not an ABC affiliate at the time?

We spent many nights at the Cincinnati Gardens watching rasslin in the 60s. Bought cheap seats on top, then worked our way down to floor level. A friend's dad was an usher, and he looked the other way.

I believe you're thinking of Pampero Firpo, the "Wild Bull of the Pampas." He had a long-running feud with the Sheik. My dad and I used to love watching rassling on the tee-vee . . . .

I have to admit that no begging, pleading or the like could get my father to take us to the Gardens for wrestling.

Once I got to Richmond, the $6 admission was well worth it.

Ah yes - he of the dreaded "El Garpio", a fiendish submission hold in which he attached what looked like snow tire studs on the ends of his fingers, then he applied a claw-like grip to his victim's head. Good times...
