When I went to Cincy for the first time this summer, I tried the chili at Skyline, since it was a Cincy thing. Yes, it's really wierd, but I loved the stuff. I went to 5 Star the next day. It was maybe a touch better, imo.

Cincinnati chili is something to experience. I agree it's either a love or hate thing with non-natives. Half seem to love it the other half can't stomach it. I joke for my kids it's a food group. For our out of town relatives it's first on their list of places to go once they arrive. For my vegetarian relatives I make a version using TVP in place of hamburger, they love it!

Not a native, but we travel to Cincinnati for holidays to visit my boyfriend's wonderful grandpa, who is a lifer. I was instantly taken to Skyline upon my first visit to town, and told in no uncertain terms that it was THE place to get chili, not Gold Star. No idea if I believe that (Enough time living in Chicago and enough time living in Kansas City to know that people do the same thing with deep dish pizza and with ribs & BBQ, and it's all pretty subjective). But what I do know is that that chili is sweet, sweet deliciousness and I look forward to it every time. Last time we were in town, my BF picked up seasoning packets so we could make our own back home in KC. Divine. I don't even really care for traditional Tex Mex chilis, yet I love this!

I think you would be much more satisfied with the canned version as opposed to the packets. Available everywhere in Cincinnati and even on Amazon.

So what if it's not "real chilli?"

It's Cincinnati style chilli and its good as heck. Well locals like it. Outsiders do not but who cares?

Skyline is king as far as i'm concerned. The local places are good too. Gold Star is mush.

Y'all might be amused to know that cans of Skyline are considered dangerous liquids by the TSA at the Dayton airport. A friend of mine tried to bring a couple of cans to me when she visited a few weeks ago, and they were confiscated.

Then she walked 10 yards to a gift shop and bought the very same items, and stowed them in her carryon.

Someone should tell the TSA that cans of Skyline aren't dangerous until they're consumed ...

They are liquids. Had she followed the rules and placed the chili in a CHECKED bag, she would not have had to replace them.

Personally, I prefer the Cincinnati brand Chili mix as it is easier to ship and much cheaper.

I highly doubt that chili -- Skyline or otherwise -- would be considered a liquid by anyone with any scientific knowledge whatsover.

It might become a liquid after you eat it, but that's a whole 'nother story.
