Which metro is growing the fastest?
1. Raleigh
(gap)
2. Madison
(gap)
3. Augusta
4. Richmond
You're a bit off here. Of course Raleigh's growth is significantly faster than the others. Madison does rank second, but Richmond (not Augusta) ranks third, and there's not a big gap between them (13.60% for Madison, 12.87% for Richmond). Augusta comes in last at a growth rate of 7.90%. Rates are for 2000-2009.

Whoops my bad, thats what I had meant, I knew there were two that were close by each other. But I got that skewed when posting. Madison & Richmond then small gap to Augusta.
Raleigh though, what an unbelievable growth rate. Wow.

I've gotta go with Richmond on this one. The city is more urban and gritty than the others, with hundreds of blocks of rowhouses throughout the Fan District, Museum District, Jackson Ward, Church Hill, etc. I also think that Richmond has a great skyline for the size city it is.

Interestingly enough, most of that growth has flown under the radar nationally while it's certainly not a secret in NC. I suspect that the city is at a tipping point where there's going to be much more visibility to it from outside the state in the coming decade.
The CSA, which Raleigh anchors, will probably cross the 2 million mark in a five years.

Ranking them by urbanity, I'd also place Richmond at the top. Second would be Madison, then Raleigh, then Augusta.

I concur with this list. Richmonds urban fabric is very welcoming and gives it quite a charm. You wouldn't think you're in a metro of only 1.3 million (I think its around there), it feels more like 2-3 million.

Agreed. It was built very compactly. However, current construction that surrounds the core is loose, which gets you out to a low density/rural setting pretty quickly. To me, these areas don't go all that far when compared to other cities.
