Which city has the brightest future?
I'd say Raleigh followed by Madison.

Which city is the best metro to live in?
IMHO, Madison easily. Four seasons, between 2 lakes, highly educated public, progressive politics, the most densely populated of the group, future HSR to Milwaukee and Chicago, and overall high quality of life.

Which metro is growing the fastest?
Pop. change from 2000-2009
Raleigh +32.57%
Madison +12.92%
Richmond +12.87%
Augusta +7.90%

You have one point backward. Charlotte is lucky that it's near Raleigh.

Raleigh:
Census 2000 - 276,093
Census estimate 2009 - 405,791
Growth of almost 47% in the city limits alone. Also, the Raleigh/Cary MSA was the fastest growing metro in year ending 2009. Additionally, Raleigh/Cary MSA is projected to be the fastest growing metro nationally through 2025. This question is not even a contest with the others listed. In metros over 1 million, only Austin, TX can mimic Raleigh's growth rates.

This is a tough fight between Richmond and Raleigh. I love both of these cities but I think the future is brighter for Raleigh.

Nortonguy I know you love your city and it would be exciting to see Augusta grow to the level of those other metros you mentioned, but it's not going to happen anytime soon. If anything, I see Savannah surpassing Augusta as Georgia's second-largest metro between now and 2020 once the economy rebounds fully. If you count the number of people who live on BOTH sides of the Savannah River now, Savannah already IS bigger than Augusta:

SAVANNAH CSA = 417,512
BEAUFORT-HILTON HEAD MiSA = 178,436
TOTAL = 595,948

AUGUSTA: 346,188 (GA) + 177,061 (SC) = 523,249

-- Savannah is 4th busiest container port in the country, second on the East Coast after NY-NJ and is only going to get bigger with the harbor deepening project due for completion in 2014. (Last week the biggest cargo ship in the world, the size of an aircraft carrier and length of 3 football fields, made it's first port-of-call to Savannah.)
-- Carnival Cruise Lines wants to move one of its ships here from Jacksonville. A study is underway now to decide where best to build a cruise ship terminal in downtown Savannah.
-- Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport is among the fastest growing in the SE and already larger than any airport in S.C., with Jet Blue likely to join the lineup of 7 airlines already here now by year's end.
-- Savannah Visitors Bureau estimates the city will welcome a record 8 million tourists this year -- almost TWICE as many as go to Charleston every year. Savannah is the No. 1 tourist destination for residents of Florida.
-- More than 1,000 new motel rooms opened in Savannah this year to meet demand of a growing tourism and convention industry.
-- A new high-rise luxury hotel and shopping/retail/entertainment complex is due to be built on Hutchinson Island in the next 2-3 years.
-- Construction is to begin in the next couple of years as well on a new 16,000-seat sports arena in downtown Savannah. There's also talk now of building a new baseball stadium in the city.
-- The long-awaited 5th and final leg of the Truman expressway that connects downtown Savannah to the huge Southside district of the city is under construction and should be open by 2012.
-- Thousands of acres of pine forests along I-16 in West Chatham County have been annexed into City of Savannah and rezoned to allow for upwards of 40,000 housing units; some of these developments (Savannah Quarters) got underway before the economy tanked, and for the others infrastructure (roads, water, sewer construction) is going in now. Hundreds of new housing units are already going up in suburban Pooler, Garden City, Bloomingdale and Port Wentworth DESPITE the economy. Two different multi-plex movie theaters are under construction in Pooler right now for opening around Thanksgiving, and a second WalMart Supercenter has been announced for Pooler as well. An outdoor "lifestyle" center with Target, Belk, Dillard's and other major national retailers and restaurant chains is also on the boards on I-16 near I-95.
-- The retirement sector, when it returns, can't be stopped. Those Baby Boomers are coming this way.

Savannah passing Augusta???? This won't happen in a million years. And Savannah is NOT bigger if you count the people who live on BOTH sides of the savannah river. In 2009 Savannah's MSA was 335k and the CSA 417K. The 2009 MSA of Augusta was 535k. Hilton-Head is not even apart of Savannah's CSA and does not rely on the city of Savannah...

People have no idea about Plant Vogtle, SRS, Medical District, and Fort Gordon in Augusta. Raleigh, Madison, or Richmond CAN'T compete in terms of new construction/infrastructure and definitely not Savannah.

Comparing the Augusta of 2010 to the Augusta of 2000-2009 is laughable. There is over $340 million worth of construction in a 1 mile radius downtown.. The Hyatt, parking deck, 2 Holiday Inn Express, etc haven't even started..

Are you really comparing Augusta to Richmond, Raleigh, and Madison?? Come on man be real. Augusta is nowhere near the level of those three other cities. Augusta is in the same league as Columbus, Savannah, Huntsville, Chattanooga, Greenville, etc. Raleigh is 30 years ahead or more of Augusta as is Richmond.

1. Raleigh 1,398
2. Richmond 626
3. Augusta 622
4. Huntsville 573
5. Greenville 443
6. Savannah 253
7. Chattanooga 220
8. Madison 191
9. Columbus 154

Yes, I'm comparing the new construction/infrastructure at Plant Vogtle, Fort Gordon, Medical District, and SRS to anything in Madison, Raleigh, and Richmond. Obviously you have no idea about the construction underway in Augusta.

The dollar volume of new Southeast residential(first 2 months of 2010)...

1. Tampa
2. Atlanta
3. Raleigh
4. Orlando
5. Charlotte
6. Miami
7. Jacksonville
8. Charleston
9. Augusta
10. Columbia

Doesn't matter. Those three cities are 30 years ahead of Augusta. Columbus, Savannah, and all of those other cities have tons of construction going on themselves.

Uh? Do you know Madison's MSA is 560k and Augusta's is 535k. The MSA of Columbus is only 292k.. Augusta is much closer to Madison than Columbus is to Augusta.

How can Augusta be nowhere near the level of Madison, but you mention Augusta in the same tier as Greenville .... Greenville's MSA is 100k larger than Madison and the CSA is over 1 million people...

Raleigh, Madison, and Richmond do have tons of construction, but not on the level of Augusta btw 2010-2017...
