I know. It kills people to give credit to Houston or any Southern or sunbelt city for anything. It must never be at the level or even try to one up an older city in it's wildest dreams. Why sunbelt or southern cities are even mentioned in city vs city forums is beyond me.
Spade, what kills me is that people from Southern or sunbelt cities run down other Southern or sunbelt cities.
Ok, so you think if we could somehow conduct a scientific study on which city is preferable, Houton or Philadelphia, Houston would somehow do better than it's done in this poll? lol.... that's delusional. It's Philadelphia, period. Putting these two in a head to head match up is ridiculous.
And, by the way, and again, I'm not slamming Houston. I am well aware of the advantages of living in a up-and-coming metro with a low cost of living since I live in one myself. I think Houston embarrasses itself though by acting like it can compete with the older, established cities .. or that it somehow exists in a "big four" because it just so happens to have incorporated a freaking county's worth of territory.
But It does exist in the big four, because it's right up there with the big four. Houston didn't just become the 4th largest city overnight, nor has it been arbitrarily assigned such. Since so many people here are caught up in numbers and scientific elements, why can't they deal with the reality that the CENSUS has verified that Houston is the 4th largest.
It does seem that people (on here at least) have a problem with Houston's status and population. This city is not 'acting like it can compete with older cities'. It can compete. The mere fact that something like this thread/poll is ever present, in attempt to discredit the city is evidence of that.
The problem is people keep trying to make Houston NYC South or Philly South. No, it does not have the old architecture. If people want that, then they should go to or move to those older, established cities, and stop bashing Houston for something it's not, and then bashing it , because your under the assumption (or want to believe) it's trying to be something it's not. You all can't have it both ways.
As far as this online poll, it's hardly scientific. Most here would vote for Philly simply out of spite for Houston. Nothing scientific about that at all.

Because census numbers can be misleading when comparing certain cites. As for dealing with reality, the reality is that Philly is actually a more populated area than Houston.

Spite for Houston? lol. People just don't care for it, and are sick of constantly hearing about it. It's a mass of low density sprawl that can be found in hundreds of other cities in the nation. If Houston dropped off the face of the earth no one would miss it. For every Philly there are at least 30 Houstons. Actually no Philly is truly unique, as is Boston, SF, NOLA etc. So what if people go there cos it's warm and cheap, there are cities with 10 million in China nobody's ever heard of. Having more people does not make a city better at all.

Some people act like since Houston has surpassed Philadelphia in population it's somehow superior. They act like any city in the Northeast that isn't NYC or DC is crumbling and filled with crime, just because it recorded population loss for decades in the 20th century.
