Lol, it's funny how you're chomping at the bit. Houston will not be a better city, even if the suburbs grow...that's a given.
Its called being baited... We took it and said our piece. Population passed of Chicago city proper .... will probably happen. But the affectionately called ... Chicagoland metro is secure for decades. We also do not know when a reversal of the northern migration south steered by corporate America.... will moderate and then end. But it will come.

In 2.5 decades Chicago's metro will drop below Dallas-FW, in 2.5 years Chicago's CSA undoubtedly will drop below DC-Baltimore and later SF possibly, and in 8-10 years Houston should pass Chicago's city population. I think and firmly believe that all of these things will happen, it's only a matter of time.
This is not to diminish its status in anyway, as well as its urban area which will stay the strongest of the bunch.

Chicago's time has passed. It is Houston and Dallas's time. Thank you for serving us well Chicago, but Texas cities are taking over. Don't look over your shoulder to long LA and NYC. You're next!

I'd rather Houston focus on continuing building up its inner loop and focusing on improving its infrastructure, transportation and the efforts to restore the Buffalo Bayou. Chicago is on a totally exceedingly different level from Houston and that won't change from some silly city population count.
yeah, that's the thing. Phoenix just surpassed Philadelphia... it didn't suddenly make Philly less of a tourist destination or stop them from getting cool New York culture much more quickly than other cities or stopped hipsters living in Fishtown from being cool. It didn't suddenly turn Phoenix from a sprawling city of stripmalls and retirees into a power house.
Houston will pass Chicago, but it won't matter. Even if Chicago falls to fifth, even if it's MSA falls to fourth... it will remain a vitally important city culturally and geographically and it will remain more appealing from an urban perspective. After all, nobody cares that San Francisco will likely be passed by Columbus, Ohio at the next census.
Does it really matter? I mean, its not like the cities are going to be any different if Houston passes Chicago. Houston is still going to have the same layout it does and Chicago will too. They will still have the same offerings too.
Too much goes into garbage like this.
Also this. The mere fact that anyone considers Chicago "cool" 35 years after LA passed it to become #2 is the proof that these metrics don't matter. Because on the day before that change occurred, Los Angeles was exactly as cool and prominent as it is today and so was Chicago. Not a damn thing changed.
