This is a NY-LA thread. It has nothing to do with Midwestern cities.
If you want a Chicago-Milwaukee comparison thread, then please create one.
I was going to quote this post and I accidentally repped you so don't think there are people out there that actually agree with you. Anyway, Milwaukee has nothing to do with anything. Stop bringing it up and stop trying to insult the midwest. Unknown to you, over 70 million people live in the midwest. Nearly 1/3 of all u.s residents.
I don't understand how we can say LA offers the greater cultural contributions. The two are close in terms of music production though far more "genres" have come out of NYC than LA and corporate headquarters are mostly in NYC and not LA. And while LA certainly has more narrative film and television productions there (NYC is no slouch in that department and has been making gains while LA has been hemorrhaging), NYC is certainly ahead when it comes to advertising, publishing, news/journalism, theater and fashion.

I am with oycrumbler on this one. No disrespect meant to LA here but New York City is much more well rounded. From big recording studios (pretty much the same studios operating in LA) to ballet, Broadway theater, publishing, advertising, journalism, TV stations headquarters, TimeWarner, Viacom and... two big film studios, New York is a multimedia giant. New York loses to LA only in film making, everything else is better represented in New York than in LA, including many national news outlets in the city. From New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time and Newsweek to Fox News and NBC, CBS, ABC, NBC news headquarters, New York City media greatly influence and shape opinions in the US and to some extent abroad.
Just to add to what urbanprofiler mentioned, advertising also has a large influence on culture, influencing everything you see on television, newspapers, magazines, billboards, radio and influencing everything you buy. I would think that that particular measure of influence would favor New York City. "Madison Avenue" is synonymous with advertising and according to the most recent list available on wikipedia (2005), two of the three largest advertising agencies in the world are headquartered in New York.
New York. Los Angeles is a major global city no doubt. Gives New York a run for its money in a way no other US other than Chicago could even think about. But nobody has ever called L.A "The Capital of The World." There's a reason for that. L.A. is probably slightly ahead of NY in terms of media and entertainment influence....and even thats debateable....but politically, economically, overall clout....NYC is still the heavyweight champ.
