Lived in both for many years, I think Dallas has the edge on this one.

Guys, I have been a life long resident of the DFW area. I finally have the opportunity to get out of here and move anywhere in the US (own internet business). I live in Fort Worth currently. my brother lives in downtown Dallas. Dallas was an amazing area 10 years ago, but is rapidly turning to slum. The once beautiful downtown is a wasteland, with many aggessive panhandlers. Deep ellum is dead. Lemmon averue is dying. It's just a dirty decaying city.

Fort Worth is only slightly better, but many parts are rapidly turning to slum as well. Both cities have huge amounts of decaying sprawl. The suberb cities like Irving and Arlington are pretty slummy on average. Not very walkable.

Not the most horrible places in the world, but not the best. Fort Worth is a little bit cheaper and a little less slummy.

The ugly slum factor is a major problem in most major cities.

*suburb*

.... and I think the word 'slum' might be stretching it a bit.

Neither. Dallas feels dead and empty. Fort worth is more lively, but it's lively with people I want nothing to do with.

This is the biggest crock I've ever read. I was just in downtown a few weeks ago. We got there during the day, walked around ate and what not, then later on in the evening we went and watched a concert at The House Of Blues. This was on a Wednesday. The city was very alive, a lot of scattered people during the day. And as far as it being a wasteland? You must have a personal vendetta against Dallas, probably why you moved. The downtown is becoming more and more beautiful every month. The 360 view from the House Of Blues parking lot is one of the most magnificent views you'll ever get from a downtown. They're building so many amazing buildings in Uptown that's giving downtown a sense of density for once. They're definitely on the right path.

Not sure exactly where we are crossing paths, but my brother lives on right next to Neiman Marcus on Main street. Absolutely dead on a Saturday afternoon about a month ago. Dirty, pandhandled to and from car, and many closed storefronts. Did not feel safe. The West End is all but dead.

Went to the Aquarium a few weeks ago. Many homeless people. Again, downtown dead and dirty. This is not how it was 10 years ago. It was lovely then. Reminds me of how run down the once beautiful Atlanta downtown was. Sorry to offend, but it's just a rough looking slum in the making.

No personal vendetta, just a couple of rundown cities on the decline.

Umm.... Really?
Dallas is known for being too clean and sterile. This is the first time I think I've ever heard it called a slum and downtown is actually improving a lot. Sounds like you're just ready to get out of dodge.

Really? You see it on here all the time from the ATL and Houston posters who say Dallas has no culture/character and is too planned etc etc. Maybe its just lame attempts to put Dallas down and grasping at straws. I like how Dallas is developed. It feels more urban.

To me, Dallas is not a lot different from Atlanta or Houston. A lot of sprawl, homelessness, and trash. But a lot of cities have that, so it's nothing personal.

If you have long term family roots here in DFW, or are really active in the church, you will like it here in this area. If you are a bar person you will do fine. It's not the most terrible set of cities, it's just not very walkable and very skimpy on culture and nature. You don't see very many people getting out and walking in DFW as a whole. Like many cities, this area is endless strip malls and clap board housing developments.

I have found that the more money I make---that is, the more money there is to spend on entertainment, etc., the more God awful boring this place becomes when looking for high quality, non bar/mall centric things to do. If I wanted to get drunk, snort coke, and do topless bars....yes, this is a great area to blow some money.

The people are not rude here, they are usually just drunk or needing to escape reality with church, escorts, or perscription drugs. This is not a lone observation---a lot of people not fitting into these categories feel misplaced here.
