Not every city has a CSA...so it isn't really fair to compare CSAs in this situation.

Was D.C. one of the choices? There are several cities that weren't offered as options that obviously have global influence...D.C. being one of them.

Perhaps the result of wonderful Census methodology.

It seems like the cities that don't have CSAs are cities whose MSA land areas are already enormous. For example, I don't believe Atlanta or Houston have a CSA...but their MSA land areas are 8,376 sq miles and 10,062 sq miles.

Also, cities which don't have CSAs don't seem to have many neighboring cities. For example. Houston and Atlanta are relatively isolated, while cities like San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, etc have many close cities within their region.

Agreed...I'd say the same about San Francisco too. It's not nearly as important as Chicago.

My list would go something like this

NYC
LA
SF Bay Area
Chicago

I put the SF Bay Area ahead of Chicago is because I think it has a greater cultural impact on the world. Lets not forget that Google, Youtube, Apple, Intel, Ebay, Facebook, Twitter and such other high tech giants are all located in the Bay Area.

Iran had to ban Facebook because it's citizens were using the communications site to announce and plan protest rallies and lets not forget that the killing of a young woman in Iran during one of their protests was blasted across youtube for the world to see and opened up the worlds eyes to what was going on.

Some countries are actually theatened by the influence these Communication sites like twitter, facebook, youtube have over their people.

Pretty reckless talk when time and again it's been shown that thier CSAs are within several percentage points. Not to mention the Bay Area is gaining fast as it's by far #1 in the country and possibly the world in venture capital investments which will pay off, and should pass Chicago within 5-10 years in economic output if not sooner. We just need another Yahoo, Google, Ebay, Facebook, Intel or Apple to get us over the hump.

I think the fact that Illinois produced President Obama is why it is in the same sphere of influence as LA\ NYC\ D.C. & San Francisco. The reason is that the Bay Area leads the nation in accepting a more socialistic lifestyle [similar to Boston].
